What is the Door Lock Actuator all about?

A door lock actuator is the component in electronic door locks that is responsible for locking and unlocking the vehicle’s doors. When a button is pressed to lock or unlock a door, the door lock switch triggers the actuator. A small motor in the actuator then triggers a series of gears. The final gear is connected to a rack and pinion set of gears, which converts the rotational motion of the motor into the vertical motion necessary to lock or unlock the door.

Keep in mind:

Some modern vehicles have a complete door lock assembly which can’t be separated into individual components. These vehicles will need the entire assembly replaced, rather than just the actuator.

Our recommendation:

The door lock system shouldn’t be checked unless you notice that something is wrong. As soon as you notice your vehicle behave oddly when you lock or unlock the doors, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Door Lock Actuator?

  • Doors won’t lock.
  • Doors won’t unlock.
  • Doors will only lock or unlock sporadically.
  • Doors make an unusual noise while locking or unlocking.
  • Car alarm goes off randomly.

How important is this service?

A door lock actuator is responsible for locking and unlocking your doors. When the door lock switch is triggered, the actuator’s motor powers a set of gears that lock or unlock your door. When the actuator stops working, there is no communication between the door lock switch and the door locks, and you’ll be unable to lock or unlock the door.

Mercury Mariner L4-2.3L Hybrid - Tie Rod End Replacement (Front Left Outer, Front Right Outer) - Franklin, Tennessee
Joe was great. This was my first experience with YM. I would like to say it was a smooth and flawless experience, but upon arrival, Joe realized that the wrong part had been ordered by YM (I have a hybrid Mariner vs. standard). Joe was apologetic and kept me updated throughout the entire process. He completed the repair the following day and the cost of the repair was significantly less than the price that had been quoted by a local repair shop. I will definitely use YM again and highly recommend Joe.

Mercury Mariner V6-3.0L - Car Thermostat Replacement - Pasadena, Texas
My appointment time was at 7 am on Monday. Carlos arrived a few minutes early! He was friendly, thorough, and knowledgeable. He replaced my thermostat and my car was as good as new, even for a 2009. I would definitely recommend Carlos and I will definitely be using him in the future. I loved that he was able to fix my car at my home and I didn't have to wait for days for my car to be ready. It took him less than an hour to fix the problem and I was able to get my son to school on time. AND, I was able to get myself to work on time.
