What is cleaning and repacking the wheel bearings all about?

A car’s wheels rotate on tapered-roller bearings which fit between the stationary axle spindle and the rotating wheel’s hub/brake mechanism. There are bearings on the inner and outer side of the hub to properly support the wheel. These are greased when installed, but the grease can, and does, break down over time, allowing dry contact between the various elements. When left unattended, this will lead to wear and, ultimately, to bearing failure.

Keep in mind:

  • Since noise is the first symptom of metal-to-metal contact, it’s likely that damage has already occurred, and that bearing replacement may be necessary.
  • The job will require the removal of the wheel and brake assembly, so it might be advisable to inspect the brake pads, steering tie rods and suspension pieces in the process.
  • If you’re going to do one wheel, it’s only logical that you should also do the other side.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle is raised and supported on jack stands
  • The front or rear wheels, brakes and hubs are removed from the vehicle
  • The front or rear wheel hubs, bearings are cleaned and greased then install a new grease seal in hub
  • The front or rear wheels, brakes and hubs are installed back on the vehicle
  • The vehicle is lowered off of the jack stands

Our recommendation:

Consider having this job done when your vehicle reaches high mileage, particularly if it has been operated with heavy loads or on unusually bumpy roads.

What is a common symptom indicating you need to clean and repack the wheel bearings?

  • Any noise noticeable from the wheels. It can start as a squeal, and then develop into a growl or even a grinding sound.

How important is this service?

A catastrophic wheel bearing failure can lead to the wheel coming off the car. Obviously, that could cause an accident or, at the very least, serious damage to the vehicle. It’s certainly worth discussing with one of our mechanics.

Error messages appeared on my dashboard concerning the braking system (anti-lock brake system [ABS] and brake assisted stopping [BAS]), when I drove the car the next day. I made an appointment with "Your Mechanic" to remedy this problem and some one is coming tomorrow.

I've never used this type of service before and was hesitant, which I'm sure most would be. But if Jonathan is was to expect from other professionals working for Your Mechanic, than I'm completely sold. Jonathan arrived on time and jumped right in. Prior to his arrival I had watch a Youtube video on the symptoms of my vehicle. The video I watched had a very skilled mechanic going through several procedures to drill down to the specific problem, but clearly the guy in the video seemed like he works with Mercedes all the time, so I was concerned what type of knowledge Jonathan might have on a Mercedes. Jonathan arrived, popped my hood, had me start the car, etc. He then proceeded to run through the same checks I just watched in the video! Not only that, I could clearly see Jonathan's skill level with a Mercedes. This man knew where everything was without hesitation. He is an extreme, highly skilled professional Mercedes mechanic. I can say this without a doubt. My wife had driven my car the day before, and it stalled on her in the middle of the row. The vehicle had been running rough before then. Jonathan checked to see if I was getting fuel to the engine, he then checked the fuel pump to make sure that it was starting when the vehicle turned on. And that when he asked 'is there fuel in the car?'. I was like, well it was a 1/4 a tank before my wife drove. Jonathan said go get some gas and I'll wait. Ran to the store, put 2 gallons in a portable tank, added the fuel and in started right up. Jonathan asked me to drive it around the block just to be sure, which I did and everything was fine. There is no doubt in my mind that if I would have taken this to a shop, I would have walked out with a $500 bill and a new fuel pump. Jonathan just earned Your Mechanic a customer for life. This man is worth his weight in gold (and then some). Needless to say - i'm extremely impressed. And embarrassed that my wife ran the car out of gas ;) Jonathan was friendly, professional, helpful, on time and most importantly honest.
