What is the Barometric Sensor all about?

The internal combustion engine is just a massive air pump. It’s designed to suck in air in order to combine it with fuel, and then ignite it with a spark. The resulting explosion moves a piston, which turns the camshaft, and creates motive power that eventually makes its way to your wheels. Given the importance of the right airflow into your engine, manufacturers came up with a way to measure air density. The barometric sensor works with your car’s MAP (manifold pressure) sensor to help determine pressure, density and other factors, and then communicate that information to the computer so it can make decisions regarding airflow and fuel mixture.

The barometric sensor is an electronic component, and it’s subject to wear and tear, high heat levels and other threats that will eventually cause it to fail through normal use.

Keep in mind:

  • The barometric sensor is not inspected during routine maintenance.
  • Depending on where the sensor is located on your particular vehicle, careless handling during replacement of the air filter could inadvertently damage it.
  • MAP sensor failure can mimic barometric pressure sensor failure.

How it's done:

  • The barometric sensor is verified that it needs to be replaced. The sensor is then disconnected.
  • The defective barometric sensor is removed from the bracket.
  • The new barometric sensor is installed onto the bracket and secured.
  • The barometric sensor is connected, tested, and scanned for proper operation.
  • The vehicle is tested to ensure proper operation of the barometric sensor.

Our recommendation:

It's critical for the engine to have the right air/fuel mixture at all times. Having too much air in the engine will make it run lean; too much fuel, and it will run rich. Both conditions cause damage to the engine. Have your car professionally inspected by one of our expert mechanics and the problem diagnosed if you notice any issues with idling or fuel delivery.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Barometric Sensor?

  • Engine burns too much or too little fuel
  • Engine knocks
  • Engine idles rough

How important is this service?

In order for your engine to operate correctly, it needs the right mix of air and fuel depending on how frequently and to what capacity you're using the engine. The barometric sensor is just one of several components that help the car’s computer determine the right mix for the situation and adjust either the airflow or flow of fuel to meet those needs. Any issues that cause your engine to operate rough or incorrectly need to be professionally inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
