What is the Ball Joint Rear all about?

Rear ball joints are a key part of your vehicle’s suspension system. The ball joints connect the control arm assembly (part of the chassis) to the steering knuckles (part of the wheels). The ball joints serve two purposes: they allow the wheels to steer and they allow the suspension to move freely. The rear ball joint acts nearly identically to the ball joints found in your shoulders and knees; they allow two separate components to operate both independently and together.

Keep in mind:

  • It’s a good idea to replace all of the ball joints at once.
  • In some cars the control arm blocks the ball joint and will need to be replaced as well.
  • After having your ball joints replaced, you should take your vehicle to a mechanic to have the wheels aligned. Mobile mechanics do not have the equipment needed to perform wheel alignments.

How it's done:

  • Remove the wheels.
  • Remove the control arm(s).
  • Remove and replace ball joints;
  • Check the entire suspension system for any problems.

Our recommendation:

Whenever your vehicle is being serviced or having routine maintenance, you should ask for the suspension to be inspected. During a major service, make sure that your ball joints are lubricated, as this will increase their lifespan. If you notice anything wrong with your wheels or suspension, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Ball Joint Rear?

  • Steering wheel is shaky.
  • Car drifts to one side or the other.
  • Rear tires make loud noises and have abnormal wear.
  • Suspension makes odd noises.

How important is this service?

The rear ball joints connect the control arm assembly to the steering knuckles, and help the suspension and wheels work smoothly. The rear ball joints help your wheels steer, so as the ball joints are damaged, your car may begin to have steering problems. The rear ball joints also allow the suspension to move, which protects both the suspension and the chassis. Damaged rear ball joints result in a vehicle that is dangerous to drive, and upon driving, can cause further damage to other parts of your car.

Lexus ES330 V6-3.3L - Power Steering Pump - Buford, Georgia
Initially I was a little skeptical about using a mobile mechanic. However, I decided to give it a shot and scheduled an appointment with YouMechanic to fix my power steering pump. I was able to pick a time and date that was convenient with my schedule. I picked a Sunday at 7am. I knew this was extremely early and that I was even going to have to be awake at that time; however, I have had bad experiences in the past where a simple 1 hour repair has held me hostage in the repair shop for the entire day. I didn't want my entire day wasted. YourMechanic advised me that the replacing the power steering pump would take 2 hours and that my mechanic, Justin Barnes, would call me when he was on the way. Sunday morning I received a call from Justin that he was on his way. He arrived on time and got straight to work. He was friendly, professional, and completed the job on time. I have driven the car for three days now and it feels like a new car. I haven't had any problems. The price was very competitive, almost half as much as I had previously been quoted. So far, I can say that I am extremely satisfied with YourMechanic and with Justin Barnes' work. I can easily see me using them again and recommending others to use them too.

Lexus SC430 V8-4.3L - Thermostat - North Las Vegas, Nevada
Ediee is a nice and friendly mechanic and he has many years of mechanical experience in aviation and automotive mechanics. His recommendation for using OEM parts are spot on, especially when required, sometimes you cannot just use aftermarket parts due to their lower standards of quality. Ediee worked 6 hours straight (it was estimated for 5 hours), making sure he completed each requested item, which I had 4 items listed. Ediee had no complaints completing the work, just concern for his next clients. He is hardworking & dedicated to his work. I will recommend him to my family and friends for future work. Thanks again Ediee and Thank you to YourMechanic.com for offering these services at home.
