What is the transfer case fluid all about?

The transfer case is a special gear box found in four-wheel and all-wheel-drive vehicles. It sends drive power from the engine to the front and rear axles. In all-wheel-drive vehicles, the transfer case helps to shift power from one axle to another, depending upon traction conditions. Lubricant fluid in the transfer case helps to keep its gears cool and turning smoothly. Replacing this fluid at appropriate intervals can help prevent premature wear and damage caused by contaminated or broken-down lubricant.

Keep in mind:

If the transfer case fluid is low, the entire transfer case should be inspected for leaks.

How it's done:

  • Check the condition of the fluid
  • Drain the fluid if it is dirty or brown in color
  • Fill the new fluid
  • Test drive vehicle and check for leaks

Our recommendation:

Transfer case fluid should be replaced at least every 30,000 miles. You should schedule this maintenance for your vehicle, and anytime the transfer case is inspected, the transfer case fluid should be checked.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the transfer case fluid?

  • Transfer case fluid is dirty
  • Car is unable to change gears

How important is this service?

The transfer case is a gear box that is unique to four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. The transfer case is responsible for sending power from the engine to both the front and the rear axles, and shifting power from one to the other depending on the conditions of the road. Transfer case fluid is responsible for keeping the components of the transfer case well lubricated. When this fluid leaks out or becomes contaminated, it is no longer able to act as a lubricant, and severe damage can be caused to the transfer case.

Kia Forte Koup L4-2.0L - Car is not starting - Tustin, California
Amazing!! Amazing!! I could not recommend Chris anymore than the utmost best mechanic out there. I had no idea what I was going to do when my car literally would not turn on last night. I was very very scared as I have no clue about anything about cars and I couldn't even get it out of my garage. I checked my oil and my oil was fine, so I thought UH-OH. What am I going to do?! I have no help or support system at all. I googled mechanics and "what to do if your car won't start." I came across YourMechanic and had no idea this service even existed! My only other option would have been to get a tow truck to get it to a mechanic and the tow would have been at least $400, PLUS the mechanic's prices. Yikes!! To have a mechanic come to your house and help you out with car troubles, boy what a Godsend. There was good communication from beginning to end via text, email, and Chris called ahead of time to let me know he was even going to be early! Woo hoo even better. He explained to me many options and was very thorough in ways he could even save me money by not even going through his company. Luckily, in my case it was a dead battery. He quickly went to the corner store, bought a battery, and came right back to my house, and even took a look at other things with my car that might need future attention and noticed how awful my AC filter was and replaced that as well! I am so so SO stoked to have found this company! Amazing all around. If you are all alone in this world and have no family or support system, like me and have no one to help you out, when your car goes DEAD!!, YourMechanic is the way to go! He was very knowledgeable about cars in general. Wonderful wonderful. I recommended to my roommate as well. I was starting to look at bus schedule routes, which were very confusing and I'm so grateful to have my car back today! I have to go on many job interviews and have night class next week and I was downright scared everything was going to fall through. This service is WONDERFUL!!

Kia Forte Koup L4-2.0L - Car is not starting - Goodyear, Arizona
Peter once again, has demonstrated his exceptional ability to diagnose automotive issues, getting to the root cause and fix only what needs to be repaired saving the customer cash. This auto had been seen by the auto dealer 4 times, and by two other mechanics with electronic specialty, replacing items such as AC compressor and other very expensive items, but never getting to the root cause. However, Peter in less than 10 minutes knew exactly what the problem was, validated his diagnosis by testing the various potential causes, and in less than one hour it was determine which part needed to be replaced, which turned out to be less than $100 dollar repair. In two visits with two different vehicles Peter has saved me more than $2,000.00, not bad for a couple of hours of work. One word to describe how Peter works "Spiffy" or at least "Brilliant"
