What is the Fog Light Relay all about?

Your fog lights don’t need to be on if the headlights aren’t on. For that reason, a fog light relay is used. The fog light relay acts as a switch, enabling the fog lights to come on only when certain criteria are satisfied. Typically, fog lights do not come on when the high beam headlights are on either. The relay directs power to the fog lights only when the switch is on and the right lighting circuits are on. The use of a relay means a low voltage fog light switch can be used. If the full voltage of the fog lights runs through a switch, the switch will become very hot and overload.

Keep in mind:

  • If your fog lights are drawing too much current, the relay can sustain damaged; conversely, a bad relay can cause damage to other components in your lighting system.

How it's done:

  • The faulty fog light relay is identified and access panel removed
  • The defective fog light relay is removed
  • The new fog light relay is installed
  • The fog lights are tested for proper operation and access panel installed
  • The fog lights are finally checked for proper operation

Our recommendation:

Fog light operation is checked when regular maintenance inspections are performed. If the fog lights aren’t working, have them diagnosed and repaired by one of our expert mechanics.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Fog Light Relay?

  • Turning on your fog lights only result in a clicking sound
  • Fog lights do not work and the appropriate switches don’t light up
  • Fog lights are on all the time

How important is this service?

All lights are required to operate as designed for a vehicle safety inspection. Not only will your vehicle not pass the inspection if the fog lights aren’t working, but your night vision will be obstructed. Have the fog light relay replaced as soon as it is deemed faulty.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe L4-2.0L Turbo - Oil Change - San Mateo, California
I had a great experience with Trung, he completed a oil change for me at my apartment. I got a notification when he was on the way. He arrived on time, completed the work in a timely manner. He was professional and polite. I would use him again. It was great having him come to my home to save me time.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe L4-2.0L Turbo - Clutch is not working - Silver Spring, Maryland
Appointment was scheduled for for 5p and I get phone calls and texts at 4p asking if he can come at that time, otherwise he won’t be able to come and will have to reschedule. I work from home and work have a very sensitive job and the interruption was very much not appreciated, especially because the appointment had been booked for days in advance and he contacts me the day of. Of course I’m not able to drop everything and have him come right then, so he tells me he’ll have to reschedule for the next day. Then for the time we reschedule for, he shows up almost an hour late and spends maybe fifteen minutes total at the appointment before leaving. No 50 point inspection, just checks it out and makes a suggestion about what he ‘thinks’ the issue is. I was disappointed to spend $90 for 15 minutes especially after him rescheduling with no explanation and the disrespect to my time. I appreciated him still coming out, but I will not be booking with him again and will strongly reconsider utilizing this service vs taking the risk of going to a regular mechanic amid the pandemic.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe L4-2.0L Turbo - Oil Change - Boston, Massachusetts
Raised my car really high up on a un-leveled surface to the point where the jack slightly jerked from not being locked properly. Overall did well with the oil change but I think he was unfamiliar with my car brand so there was moments where there was he was spilling oil onto the ground. Did very well with the inspection of the car though.
