How does an alternator help your car run?

The alternator is the component that charges the battery in your car. When you use electrical components in your car (stereo, lights, etc.), the battery loses power. Car has sat for a month and won't start

The engine was replaced by Holden 18months ago, then last month there was a fuel pump error which ended with Holden having to advise the mechanic what to do to correct the error (maybe was the sensor) anyway after paying $1400 thy now advise the engine mount needs replacing for $1600. They sold the car and have serviced/repaired it since new (10yrs) should they have not noticed the mount when they replaced the old engine with new?
