What is lubricating the suspension all about?

The suspension allows the wheels of a vehicle to roll over bumps and through potholes while keeping the car in control and the passengers comfortable. Numerous parts in the suspension system move around and connect to the vehicle via joints. Common joints include ball joints and u-joints. Proper lubrication keeps moving parts moving. Some connections in the suspension will contain bushings that could benefit from lubrication as well.

Keep in mind:

  • If components in the suspension of a vehicle are broken or missing, lubrication will not fix the problem.
  • Different parts take different kinds of lube, so consult the vehicle’s manual for the manufacturers recommendation.
  • Some vehicles come with joints that are “permanently lubricated” from the factory. These may need to be lubricated if they exhibit symptoms of excess friction.

How it's done:

  • Apply grease to the zerk fittings of all the steering and suspension parts.

Our recommendation:

The manufacturer should have a certain number of miles it suggests in the owner's manual that the vehicle will travel before needing lubrication on parts of the suspension. Different joints, pivots, and bushings will need individual attention. Some parts will need more attention than others. When accessing the points in the suspension that need to be serviced, inspect surrounding parts and components that may show wear. This includes parts along the drivetrain or within the steering system. Preventative maintenance can be very straightforward with regular inspection of crucial parts.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to lubricate the suspension?

  • Loud squeaking from under the car when it goes over bumps
  • Groaning sound when turning
  • Suspension not moving smoothly, feels too bumpy

How important is this service?

This service is important in several ways. Without proper lubrication, the suspension will not provide a comfortable ride. If the vehicle is not going over sumps smoothly, the handling could be negatively affected. Expensive parts wear out faster with excess friction.

Chevrolet Suburban 1500 V8-5.3L - Car is not starting - San Francisco, California
First and foremost, I would give David extra stars or a higher rating. Second, let me start of by saying I am your stereotypical female when it comes to cars. I can check the oil, fill the gas tank, and see if my tire needs air and that is about it. And I will believe everything and anything a "mechanic" tells me is wrong with my car. I once went to get my tired rotated and walked away carless and $1,000.00+ bill. How? I do not know. A week ago I was referred to your facebook page, two nights ago my car battery pooped out on me and yesterday I called the friend, Nico Rodriguez, who reffered me to it. Turns out hes an employee of this fine establishment. Anyway, in no time, I got the appointment set up and next thing i know, I have a call from David saying he is one job away from mine and will be at my house between 3 - 3:30. I was informed when he was on his way, and he was not a minute late! Timing is very important in my house, because I time everything around my baby's nap and eating schedule. Right away I felt comfortable and i very vaguely explained what had happened and what I thought was wrong. He asked questions without being intimidating and got right to work. I went out to check up on him and he explained very clearly, in plain english, what he had done and what he was doing to isolate the problem. I was ecstatic that he was finally getting to the root of the problem. A little later he informed me that he could either get the part and come back tomorrow or just finish the job tonight. I explained how I needed to be in Santa Cruz and Tahoe this coming week and he was more than understanding. With no hesitation or complaining he got the job finished and again, explained very thoroughly what the problem was and how he fixed it. I was so relived and for it all to happen at my front door was just amazing. Honestly I hesitated to go through this company, but I am so happy that i did. Nico and David made this such an easy experience, and I am thrilled how resonably priced the job was. I will never ever go with another mechanic or another company. I highly recommend this to women ( and men) who hate garages, this is a way to avoid all the bad customer service and unreasonably high prices. Thank you so much for being amazing! We will be calling ya'll soon, seeing as we have 5 cars that need tending to.
