What are drive belts all about?

The drive belts are connected to the crankshaft (a part of the engine), as well as to the alternator, air conditioning, and power steering system. The belts are responsible for transferring power from the crankshaft to these other systems. Over time, and especially if multiple systems that put stress on the belts are being used, the belts can grow loose, or unaligned. When this happens the belts will need to be adjusted so that they can return to their normal, optimal position.

Keep in mind:

  • If the drive belt is at all frayed or cracked it should be replaced instead of adjusted.
  • When the drive belt is adjusted, the drive belt tensioner and idler pulley should both be inspected.

How it's done:

  • Adjust the drive belts

Our recommendation:

Your drive belts should always be checked during tuneups and maintenance. During any kind of servicing your drive belts should be checked to see if they need to be replaced or adjusted.

What is a common symptom indicating you need to adjust the drive belts?

  • Squealing noise from the engine

How important is this service?

Your alternator, power steering, and air conditioning are all powered by your drive belt. The belt is connected to the crankshaft, and transfers power to these systems. As the belt is used and wears, it can grow lose, or begin to become unaligned. If the drive belt becomes loose, it won’t move as efficiently, and it won’t transfer power as efficiently. If the belt becomes unaligned, it can come into contact with parts of the engine, which can cause damage.

Cadillac Fleetwood V8-5.7L - Electric Problems - Orlando, Florida
Great mechanic. Very thorough, helped and tried to locate the main problem. He couldn't locate the problem I was having but then again this was my 3rd opinion (1st time with YourMechanic) and to no avail. Took his time and was never in a hurry.

Cadillac Fleetwood V8-4.1L - Fuel Pump - Oakland, California
I made an appt. for Tien to come by and replace the fuel pump for my no start diagnosed by him through the inspection I had a few weeks earlier. Tien got to work on the car immediately on arrival. As in many if not all jobs, it turned out to be a more complicated than expected. In the process of changing the fuel pump, he discovered that the new fuel pump was slightly different than the one being replaced and the wiring would need to be adjusted somehow to be able to use the new one. It was amazing to see as he used his knowlege and experience to make the necessary adjustments to make the part work! He could have taken the "shortcut way" which a lot of mechanics would have done. When he removed the old fuel pump, it seems that only the fuel hose part was damaged beyond repair, but the rest of the unit was intact and probably still working. He could have maybe just changed the hose part and left the rest of the old unit as is, but decided to replace the whole unit if he could, pending the wiring adjustment mentioned above. Thanks Tien for a great job highly recommend you to everyone!
