How to Buy a Personalized License Plate in Nevada

A personalized license plate is a great way to add a little bit of fun and flair to your car. With a personalized plate, you can make your car uniquely “you,” and use your license plate to say something about you.

In Nevada, you can not only personalize your license plate message, but can choose a license plate design as well. Between these two options, you can easily create a license plate that you love, and that adds some of your personality to the front and back of your vehicle. Ordering a plate is a relatively easy and straightforward process, so if you’ve been looking for an affordable way to improve your car, a personalized plate is a great option.

Part 1 of 3: Select your personalized license plate

Step 1: Go to the Nevada license plate page. Visit the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles license plate website.

Step 2: Select a license plate design to use. On the side bar, locate the header that says “Plate categories.” Select one of the listed categories to see the available license plate designs in that category.

Look through all the available design options, and find the one that you would like to use.

  • Note: Different plate designs have different fees. Be sure to note the price associated with the plate you are choosing. The fee is located next to the plate description.

Step 3: Select a personalized license plate message. From the license plate page, click on the button titled “Personalized plate search.”

Click on the button that says “Choose a different plate background,” then select the license plate theme that you picked out.

Type your message into the box below the sample plate. The message can contain letters, numbers, and spaces. The character limit is dependent on the license plate design that you have chosen.

  • Warning: Vulgar, crude, or offensive license plate messages are not allowed. They may appear as available on the license plate website, but your application will be rejected if the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles deems your message as inappropriate.

Step 4: Check the availability of your license plate message. After typing in a message, click the button that says “Submit” to see if the plate is available.

If the plate is not available, keep trying new messages until you find one that works.

Part 2 of 3: Order your personalized license plates

Step 1: Download and print the personalized license plate application form. From the Nevada license plates page, click on the link that says “Application SP 66” to download the form.

Print the form. If you prefer, you can fill out the form on your computer before printing it.

Step 2: Enter the personalized license plate information. Select the type of vehicle that you have, and then write down the license plate design that you would like.

Write your license plate message in the box titled “First choice.” If you are worried that your license plate message will no longer be available when your application is received, you can input a second or third choice, as well.

List the current license plate of the vehicle.

Where prompted, give an explanation for your license plate message. This helps the Department of Motor Vehicles decide whether or not your personalized message is appropriate.

Step 3: Enter your personal information on the form. Where prompted, provide your name, driver’s license, address, phone number, and email.

If you are ordering the license plate for someone else, list their name where prompted.

  • Note: The license plate must be ordered for the registered owner of the vehicle.

Step 4: Write down your local Department of Motor Vehicles office.

Step 5: Sign and date the application.

Step 6: Pay the personalized license plate fee. Write a check or procure a money order, payable to the Nevada DMV, if you are sending your application in the mail.

Fill out a credit card application form if you are going to pay by fax.

The fee that you owe can be found next to the license plate design that you chose.

Step 7: Send the application to the Department of Motor Vehicles. If sending the application by mail, send it to:

Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles
555 Wright Way
Carson City, NV 89711-0700

If sending the application by fax, send it to (775) 684-4797.

Alternately, you can simply drop off your application at a full service Department of Motor Vehicles.

Part 3 of 3: Install your personalized license plates

Step 1: Pick up your personalized license plates. When your plate application is processed and accepted, your personalized plates will be manufactured and sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles office that you listed on your application. They will notify you when your plates have arrived.

When you receive your notification, go to the office and pick up your plates.

Step 2: Install your plates. Install your personalized license plates on the front and back of your vehicle.

Make sure to install your new plates as soon as you pick them up.

If you do not feel comfortable installing the license plates by yourself, you can stop by any garage or mechanic shop and have them installed.

This is a good time to check your license plate light as well. If your license plate light is burned out, you need to hire a mechanic to come help you do the job.

With personalized Nevada license plates, your vehicle will showcase your personality or interests. You’ll be happy to see your awesome plates every time you go to your car.
