Serpentine/Drive Belt Replacement Service & Cost

What is the Serpentine/Drive Belt all about?

The serpentine/drive belt or v-belt is a rubber belt that connects the alternator, power steering, and AC to the part of the engine (crankshaft) which transfers the power from the engine to those components. Without this belt, the battery will not get charged and none of the electrical accessory components in the car will work. The serpentine belt and v-belt are also known as "drive belts."

Because of the high amount of heat in the engine, the belt can develop cracks over time and eventually break. If the belt breaks, the steering wheel will be difficult to turn and driving will be hazardous.

In some cars, water pumps are driven by the drive belts. If the belt breaks, water and coolant needed to keep the engine cool will not properly flow to the engine. The engine will overheat, potentially causing severe damage.

Belts

Keep in mind:

A car will either have a serpentine belt(s) or v-belt(s). Cars that have a serpentine belt will have one or two belts. Most modern cars have only one belt, driving all the engine accessory components. If the car has v-belts, it will most likely have four belts.

How it's done:

  • Inspect the belts for cracks.
  • Remove and replace any damaged belts.
  • Inspect pulleys and bearings.

Our recommendation:

A mechanic should inspect the drive belts during oil changes. If you hear a squealing noise from the engine, it is likely that the drive belts need adjustment or replacement.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Serpentine/Drive Belt?

  • Squealing noise coming from engine if the belt is loose or worn out.
  • Lack of steering if the belt is broken.
  • Battery Warning Light is on.
  • Engine overheats.

How important is this service?

The drive belts connect the engine to the alternator, air conditioning, power steering, and sometimes the water pump. These belts are how power is transferred from the engines to these other systems. When the belts break, the engine will be unable to transfer power to the alternator, air conditioning, and power steering. Since the alternator is responsible for charging your battery, a broken drive belt means that the electrical components won’t work in your vehicle. The power steering also will fail, which makes it difficult and dangerous to steer. If your car’s water pump is also connected to the drive belt then the engine will not have a properly functioning cooling system, and your vehicle will be likely to overheat.

This was my first experience with My Mechanic, and Steven represented the company well. He was timely, efficient and put us at ease. When I texted for a quote, the guy reported being from California and was very helpful and professional. He thoroughly explained the process and what to expect. I wasn't enthused about having to give my credit card number over the phone, but I suppose it is neccecary to avoid wasting time and gas for employee's if a customer flakes out. I was far less impressed with the office staff. I'd attempted to postpone the appointment, but was told there would be a late cancellation fee placed on my card. I believe $50. To avoid this, I had a friend wait at my house for the mechanic. I explained I'd be unreachable the following day and that my phone was being erratic about messages. I was assured someone would be here at the specified time. I'd explained I convinced a friend to sit at my house to meet the mechanic. She had things to do, however sat here for two hours, no one showed up. I called the following day to inquire as to what had happened and was not happy about the way the employee spoke to me. When I inquired as to why the mechanic hadn't shown up. I'm not difficult, and understand things come up. but she went straight into defensive, rude about having left a voicemail re. the mechanic not showing up. Ultimately, I ended up rescheduling. I am glad I did, as Steven was great. She'd been so indignant about the mandatory $50 fee when attempting to reschedule the dayvbefore, but I'm more concerned with the skill of a mechanic than whoever handles the phones. The rate was very fair and I will probably use Your Mechanic again.

This was my first time using YourMechanic -Allen was early to my appointment - which was great, and I appreciated him calling ahead. Allen was patient and thorough - answering all my questions (I had several lol) quickly identifying a root cause, and providing the estimate. He also did a great inspection on additional issues with my car (not related to my original inquiry) which helped to eliminate any surprises. I decided to book an appointment afterwards for my coolant leak repair - which ended up being a worn out heater core hose.
