What is the Manifold Temperature Sensor all about?

Air is the single most important element for a running engine, even more so than fuel or oil. Without a flow of fresh, clean air, combustion cannot take place, and your engine cannot operate. However, simply ensuring that airflow can reach the intake is not enough. The car’s computer needs to know a lot of information about the temperature and quality of air entering the intake. The manifold temp sensor is responsible for determining the temperature of the air, and providing that information to the computer.

The computer will determine the density of the air and adjust the fuel flow to meet that. Depending on the make and model you drive, your car may have more than one manifold temp sensor. For instance, if you have a split manifold, you’ll have a sensor for each part. Like all other sensors on your car, the manifold temp sensor is subject to high heat and wear and tear. Electrical problems such as shorts and broken wires augment the list of potential troubles.

Keep in mind:

  • The manifold temp sensor is not part of any maintenance inspection.
  • The sensor can fail due to damage to the sensor or the wiring harness.
  • A failed sensor will activate your Check Engine light.

How it's done:

  • The air cleaner is removed for access
  • The defective manifold temperature sensor is removed
  • The new manifold temperature is installed and connected
  • The air cleaner assembly is reinstalled
  • The vehicle is started and checked for coolant leaks and sensor operation

Our recommendation:

Your manifold temp sensor is subject to considerable temperature extremes and will eventually fail. Without this component and the information it provides, the computer cannot determine the density of air entering the intake, resulting in an imbalanced air/fuel mixture. This causes rich or lean operation; both circumstances will damage the engine. If you suspect a problem with the manifold temperature sensor or experience the symptoms, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose the sensor.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Manifold Temperature Sensor?

  • Check Engine light is on
  • Erratic engine operation due to incorrect air/fuel ratio

How important is this service?

Having an operational manifold temp sensor is critical for vehicle operation. If your Check Engine light is on, or you experience fuel or acceleration related problems, this may be the cause. Because many other problems display similar symptoms, it is important to work with our expert mechanics to diagnose the actual issue and make the necessary repairs.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Alternator - Chicago, Illinois
Joe is professional, mostly quiet and efficient when it came to getting the job done right in less time. It seems that he's passionate in what he does, and it shows. I thought that replacing the alternator was a DIY job until I was observing Joe and I figured out it was more complicated than DIY because it took special types of tools that I didn't have to do that particular job. Anyway, after the new alternator was installed, Joe asked me to start the car up and it worked fine. I had the car running for about ten minutes and it was still running with no warning lights flashing on the dashboard. When I have a another major problem, I'd come to Joe.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Brake Drum - Kissimmee, Florida
It's great to have your own mechanic and Enrique is a professional. He shows up on time, promptly gets to the job you've shceduled and completes it quickly. He then takes the car for a test run to make sure he's done the job in the best way possible. He's friendly, polite and knows his cars - couldn't ask for better service! So happy I found Your Mechanic! In the past I would take the car in and sometimes have to leave it because they couldn't get to my car with all the others ahead of it. Love the ease of being able to schedule Enrique and know he'll show up and get the job done and I'll be driving my car again in a few hours! And I don't have to drop it off or wait in a waiting room for it.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Car is not starting - Portland, Oregon
This review is for Russell - but first it showed Bradley then Chad for name? My car had a starter problem and by calling my mechanic to come over to fix it saved me the trouble of spending money towing it. Russell was knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. He fixed my car within a pretty short time. The only thing I'm concerned with is the re manufactured starter Russell got from O'Reilly Auto Parts. By calling O'Reilly, they told me the remanufactured part is whole-life warranty, but since the account is under Russell's name, I just wonder if later on my starter has a problem how would I get another starter without any cost. The company should think about this for the customer.
