What is the Oil Cooler Hose (Automatic Transmission) all about?

The oil cooler hose is responsible for keeping the transmission and engine oil from overheating. The hose runs from the radiator to the transmission and the engine. The oil that is used to lubricate the engine and transmission circulates through the oil cooler hose to the radiator, where it is cooled down. The keeps the oil from overheating and damaging the engine and transmission.

Keep in mind:

Any time the oil cooler hose is replaced, the oil cooler pump should be inspected as well.

How it's done:

  • Inspect for oil leaks
  • Inspect the oil cooler hoses
  • Replace oil cooler hose assembly
  • Check for leaks

Our recommendation:

Your oil cooler system should be inspected during all routine maintenance and servicing. It’s also a good idea to have your oil cooler system inspected every time your oil is changed.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Oil Cooler Hose (Automatic Transmission)?

  • Oil is leaking

How important is this service?

Your oil cooler system is responsible for cooling the oil in your engine and transmission. The oil circulates through the oil cooler hose and to the radiator, where the oil is cooled before returning to the engine and transmission. This oil is needed to keep the engine well lubricated. When the oil cooler hose breaks, oil will leak out of the hose, and will be removed from the system. The engine and transmission won’t have the lubrication they need, which can be harmful to both systems, and will likely cause overheating.

Mercury Sable V6-3.0L - Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve - Waddell, Arizona
Great experience with Peter. After several misdiagnoses by repair shops and other private mechanics, Pete was able to determine the actual issue with my vehicle. He was very courteous and knowledgeable. It is obvious he knows what he is talking about. I would not hesitate to book him again. Never been happier after getting a car worked on. Highly recommend, thank you so much!

Mercury Sable V6-3.8L - Tune-up - Lakewood, Washington
I am very impressed, both with "Your Mechanic" and also the mechanic, Ron Huret. He was very competent, and did not hurry or skip over anything. He was very concerned for the car's performance, as well as the customer's (me) satisfaction. The original estimate of labor time was 3 hours. Ron stayed almost 3 hours LATER than he was supposed to, fine tuning the timing, and little adjustments here and there. He is very diligent and patient enough to take the time out to explain simple things: (compression in the cylinders), and to show me things when I asked what it looked like: (fuel filter? Who knew?). That was very commendable and really not part of his job, as a mechanic, to humor the lady who owned the car, but he did, and now I can say that I watched him labor and sweat long enough to believe that he is knowledgeable and and also has many years of experience under his belt. I have a problem myself, in auto repair shops, because they take advantage of women, and lie to us. "Your Mechanic" is a God send. I do not have to leave my home, I do not have to deal with people I don't know or trust. Thank you so much!!! Thank you, very, very much, Ron! :)

Mercury Sable V6-3.0L - Smoke from engine or exhaust - Bethesda, Maryland
Richard is very professional and punctual! He was able to fully assess my vehicle and translate otherwise mechanic jargon in everyday language that I completely understood. The detailed assessment and feedback included, pictures of my vehicles' problem parts and Richard's voice assessment of my vehicle--all sent to my email! The affordability factor is a plus especially compared to going to a shop! Just to think, my vehicle was able to be serviced at my home by a certified mechanic that did not nickel-and-dime me..such a breath of fresh air. Make no mistakes, you will be 100 percent satisfied with Richard's outstanding service.
