Unfortunately we don’t always find ourselves driving over perfectly smooth, freshly paved roads. And while rough roads may cause some issues with your vehicle, they can also help diagnose potential issues. A banging noise while driving over bumps can be startling for a driver, especially if the same noise did not manifest itself on flat roads. If you notice a banging noise while driving over a bump, you should have a mechanic inspect your vehicle.

How this system works:

Your vehicle’s suspension system is made up of many components designed to adjust when driving over rough terrain, to ensure a comfortable ride. When these components begin to fail, they may produce clunking or banging noises to let you know something has gone wrong. However, typically when suspension components like tie rod ends and ball joints fail, they will make a banging noise all the time, and not just over bumps. The fact that the noise only seems to occur while driving over a bump may be a sign of a different issue.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Bad Sway Bar Link: A vehicle’s sway bar or anti-roll bar, helps reduce body roll while cornering. Sway bars can help keep a vehicle from rolling over when going around a sharp corner. If the sway bar breaks or is damaged it may produce a clunking or knocking sound, especially when going over bumps. Your vehicle may also had more difficulty handling when the sway bar is damaged.

  • Worn Control Arm Bushings: The control arms on your vehicle’s suspension allow for movement up and down when driving on uneven terrain. Part of the control arm assembly are bushing, typically made of rubber or polyurethane. The bushings are designed to dampen any noise that might be created when your vehicle goes over a bump. If the bushing wear down, the noise is not dampened and you may hear a resulting bang when driving over bumps.

  • Loose Brake Caliper: Your vehicle’s brake calipers are pistons that engage the brakes when the brake pedal is applied. Calipers are typically secured with bolts and do not move. If a caliper bolt has become loose it may cause the caliper to make a banging noise when driving over bumps.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the reason for the banging noise when going over bumps. The mechanic will then provide a detailed inspection report outlining the reason for the noise and the cost of any repairs that need to be made.

How it's done:

The mechanic will begin by raising the vehicle and removing tires to get a better view of the vehicle’s suspension. From here, he or she will be better able to access and replace components that may have failed.

If your vehicle is equipped with a sway bar link, the mechanic will inspect it for any signs of superficial damage. The mechanic should then look at the sway bar bushings to see if they are worn and need to be replaced. The mechanic will then remove the old bushings and sway bar if necessary, and replace them.

If the mechanic suspects the control arm bushings, he or she will check for signs that the bushing has worn down. The mechanic should also inspect the whole control arm assembly and replace it if necessary. The mechanic will then install the new bushings.

While having a loose caliper bolt is rare, it is important to have the calipers inspected because of the potential loss in braking the bad calipers could create. The mechanic should check to make sure that the bolts are securely tightened and the calipers is lined up with the rotor. If the calipers was loose it may have warped over time and become ineffective. The mechanic will replace the caliper if it is needed.

How important is this service?

A vehicle that makes a banging noise while going over a bump may reveal an issue with the suspension system. Not only does the suspension system provide a comfortable ride but it plays a critical role in the safety of the vehicle, especially when cornering and braking. If you notice a noise while going over bumps, you should have it inspected to make sure that the suspension is working properly.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L6-4.0L - Banging noises when driving over the bumps - Raleigh, North Carolina
I had a clunky clunk sound coming from the front passenger side wheel area on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I took it to a auto repair shop not too far away from my house. They told me that I needed to replace the upper ball joints in the front. They said it would cost me $770 including front end alignment ... but they couldn't do that day as they close early on Fridays (they charged me $50 for this diagnostic, by the way). They asked me to drop the Jeep off Monday morning and pick up at the end of the day. I was all set to go ahead with this. I decided to get an instant quote from YOURMECHANIC just to see what the price difference would be. The price they quoted me was $324 for everything - parts, labor, taxes. I was thrilled and so set up appointed for a few days later. Brandon showed up to my house on time and began working on the car. I would go outside and check on him occasionally. After he had the wheels off, he brought out a tool from his van to test the ball joints ... to see how lose they were. He called me over and said that there was nothing wrong with the ball joints, but that he can go ahead and change them out if I wanted. I was perplexed. Upon further inspection, he discovered that the clunky noise was due to worn out shocks. He gave a new quote of $136 to replace the 2 front shocks. We reset the appointment for later that afternoon because he had to go return the ball joints and get the new shocks. He came back a little earlier than the reset appointment time and replaced the shocks. We took it for a test drive and ... wallah .. no more noise. Awesome!!!! It was fixed! I could have easily spent $770 at that local repair shop had it not been that they were closing early that day, ... and not even have the problem fixed. But Brandon from YOURMECHANIC correctly diagnosed the problem and fixed it for $136. Thank you very much Brandon!
