What is the Oil Pressure Sensor all about?

Oil is vital for your engine – you need enough oil to lubricate and reduce friction throughout the engine. There’s no way to visually determine how much oil is being pumped through your engine, so your car’s computer relies on the oil pressure sensor to determine the flow.The oil pressure sensor is a basic electrical switch that provides information to the instrument cluster’s oil pressure gauge with the accurate real-time pressure. When the pressure is too low, not enough oil is being pumped through the engine to lubricate and cool components. When pressure drops below a threshold set by the automaker, the engine oil light on the car’s dashboard illuminates, warning you that driving could be dangerous.

Keep in mind:

  • There is no way to visually determine the operating condition of your oil pressure sensor.
  • If the sensor fails, it is impossible to determine whether there is sufficient oil flow/pressure to lubricate and protect your engine.
  • If your oil pressure sensor fails, it should be replaced immediately.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle is raised and supported on jack stands and tire is removed
  • The defective oil pressure sensor is removed
  • The new oil pressure sensor is installed
  • The engine is started and oil pressure is checked then the vehicle is taken off the jack stands
  • The vehicle is road tested for proper operation

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Oil Pressure Sensor?

  • Oil pressure light is on
  • Oil pressure light turns on and off (can indicate several potential problems)
  • Depending on your make and model, you may have an oil pressure gauge that displays pressure in PSI. Note any drops below normal operating pressure.

How important is this service?

It is absolutely vital that your engine oil pressure be constantly monitored for potentially dangerous conditions. If your oil pressure sensor isn’t working properly, it cannot do its job, and must be replaced. After Aaron reviewed by engine turn off issue when stopped idling, he inspected the car and then suggested oxygen sensor and spark plug replacement. Ok, great. Being a very old car, I probably would have been ok with a lot more. After Aaron completed the work I drove the car for about an hour, including 30+ stops in traffic downtown and it was great: engine sounded better idling ... acceleration from stop was like a turbo boost was added. I was having deja vu from when my car was new. Thanks Aaron. First mechanic in a long while to get my car that much in tune.

David is a very experienced mechanic and I appreciate his sensibility that if one part is worn out, than its partner that's been on the car just as long, should also be replaced. From experience, I normally expect that because I'd rather take care of something now than later having to take a car in or schedule another appointment especially because I'd rather avoid a car breaking down. Its a much more fun experience with preventative maintenance vs. emergency maintenance. I think that depends on people's budget but its nice to have that option and especially to have someone with much more experience to explain that.
