The dashboard of every car produced after 1996 has the ability to communicate messages of various severity and importance to the driver through warning and indicator lights.

The Service (or Service Engine) light is a warning light that is connected to the engine control unit (ECU) of a vehicle. The ECU is the brain of the car and monitors a number of systems, including:

  • Emissions: There are sensors throughout the engine management system on all cars manufactured since 1996 that alert the driver of any malfunction that will lead to unacceptable amounts of emissions entering the air.

  • Engine temperature: Sensors in and around the engine can alert the driver to excessive operating temperatures, which may lead to engine damage. Typically, this warning will be accompanied by a Temperature, Engine Overheating, or Check Gauges light.

  • Mileage: While vehicles have recorded mileage for many years, the ECU can also keep track of mileage between oil changes and other routine services.

There are many other components the ECU is capable of monitoring, and those also vary depending on the manufacturer and year of production.

Common reasons for this to happen:

The Service light is a vague warning and can indicate something as simple as too many miles between oil changes to potentially serious faults in the engine. The problem could be totally benign or very serious, and a professional inspection is the best course of action if the light is persistently illuminated. A mechanic can catch problems early that, if left unattended, could lead to costly repairs down the road.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine why the Service light is on, and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs.

How important is this service?

A Service light is important to diagnose shortly after it illuminates, given that the underlying issue could be mild or severe. Book a mechanic to perform a thorough inspection as soon as possible.

Ford Crown Victoria V8-4.6L - AC is not working - Miami, Florida
Great mechanic, worked quickly, I needed to check my a/c bevause I didn't know what was wrong with it and Oreste not only diagnosed the problem he temporarily fixed it and now I know what to fix a few months from now when the Freon runs low again. Also, he went above and beyond and let me know my transmission fluid was low and I should change the back breaks... Again, that was above and beyond since I only asked to check my a/c and he pretty much checked the whole car. Will definitely be requesting Oreste in the future.

Ford Crown Victoria V8-4.6L - Oil Change - Palo Alto, California
I had an oil change, filter change, and diagnostic done for my car, and it went decently well. The problems that occurred were understandable, and though they did affect my opinion of the experience, I would probably use the service again if I do have enough time and the price is right. While Whitney was late to the appointment, he made sure to contact me by telephone in order to make sure I knew what his ETA was and why he was late. I wasn't pressed for time so it didn't matter to me that he was late, but I can see how this would negatively affect someone's plans. Outside of that, there was some problem with my address as well, but he was still able to find me eventually. I'm glad that he came to the appointment at least, and though there was a problem with the electronic app when he tried to remove the oil filter, he honored the original price quote and did the work that I had requested for the same price. Because of these few things, I felt that the experience itself could have gone better, but the work was done and he properly diagnosed other problems with my vehicle. I had already gotten some information about my car from another place when I bought it, so it improved my opinion of his trustworthiness as a mechanic when he diagnosed the same things. Having a second quote was helpful, and knowing that someone who has already taken a look at the car would be able to service it again is helpful. Overall, I think Whitney knows what he's doing as a mechanic, and maybe he just had an off day when it comes to scheduling and waking up/being on time. Thanks Whitney, for doing the oil change and filter change for me through yourmechanic.
