What is the Hood Latch all about?

In order to ensure easy access to the engine and all of its components, your vehicle’s hood needs to stay open. However, it must be secured while driving, lest it opens and crashes into the windshield. The job of the hood latch is keeping the hood securely closed. It generally consists of a “hook and eye” type of assembly. The latch is operated via a cable that runs from the front of the car through the engine bay, passes through the firewall, and attaches to the back of the hood release handle/lever located below the steering wheel. When the hood is closed, the latch slides over the hood catch and a spring snaps the latch closed. To release the hood, you pull the release cable that opens the latch, allowing it to pop up past the hood catch. There is a secondary safety catch on the hood latch that needs to be pressed to open the hood fully. If the hood latch is seizing or broken, the hood will either not open or will not latch closed.

Keep in mind:

  • Hood latches can be damaged in many ways, including rust, accidents, debris and more.
  • If the latch is damaged and is in closed position, you may be unable to open the hood.
  • If the latch is damaged and is in open position, the hood may fly open while you’re on the road.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace hood latch assembly
  • Install new hood latch assembly.
  • Confirm that the latch is working properly.

Our recommendation:

When replacing a hood latch, it’s generally best to replace the entire latch assembly (both the hook and eye). One component will be located on the hood itself, and the other will be located on the inside of the vehicle’s front end (generally behind the grille, attached to the release handle). Depending on your car’s make and model, replacing a hood latch can be complex, and it’s important that both parts are lined up correctly. Have one of our expert mechanics handle your hood latch repair or replacement.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Hood Latch?

  • The hood will not stay closed
  • Difficulty activating the latch when attempting to open the hood
  • Hood will not open when the release is pulled

How important is this service?

Replacing a damaged hood latch is very important. While driving without an operable latch won’t damage your engine, it can be dangerous, particularly if the hood does not close securely. Even if the latch is inoperable but in the closed position (meaning your hood won’t open while you’re driving), you still need to access the engine for regular maintenance and repairs. Have your faulty hood latch replaced as soon as possible.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V8-4.8L - Brake Pads Replacement (Front, Rear) - Fort Lauderdale, Florida
I have owned a car for just about 25 years and for those same 25 years I have looked, unsuccessfully until today I might add, for a mechanic that I felt really cared about me, and now my family, and not just how much they could up-sell someone with very little knowledge of vehicles. After an awful week of rude and nasty mechanics trying to figure out how much they could charge my wife and I for repairs that we didn't even need, we began to feel like we would never be treated fairly by a mechanic because we didn't know enough about cars to question things we were being told. And then by some small miracle a friend told us about Omar from a company called Your Mechanic. I was extremely skeptical as one of our disasters earlier in the week was by another mechanic that was supposed to come to our house to do the repairs and instead decided to no call no show. But I was running out of options and time. So we scheduled an appointment for Omar through Your Mechanic and my wife and I cannot say enough good things about our incredible experience with Omar. He immediately reassured us that he would only be doing the work that needed to be done and we could expect the truck done in a few hours. I immediately felt all of the bad experiences from the previous week become a distant memory and this was all thanks to Omar and his incredible professionalism while speaking to us. I never once felt as if he looked down on us because of our lack of knowledge about cars. He went out of his way to make sure we not only understood everything but more importantly we were comfortable with his diagnosis and solutions. After we checked with him if he needed anything else from us he said no I have your phone number if I need anything I can call you otherwise I will let you know in a couple hours when I'm done. My wife and I then turned and began to head inside at which point I looked at her and said "unless we come out here and he is gone and the truck is in a bunch of pieces in the parking lot, then I am very confident we have finally found a trustworthy, honest, reliable and genuinely decent human being to be our families mechanic!" And to no surprise that is exactly what my wife and I are confident we finally found today after looking for 25 years. What some people think, and rightly so, is the hardest thing to find nowadays and that is a extremely knowledgeable, reliable, honest, trustworthy and genuinely a good human being to be their mechanic. When he looked at an estimate that we had received from a national chain he told us that we did not need to have the rear calipers replaced, as we were told by the chain, and that saved us another $150. So the national chain's initial estimate was right around $1500 and Your Mechanic's estimate was about half of that. Add to which Omar saved us the other $150 by letting us know the rear calipers didn't need to be replaced at this time because as he stated they still had a little meat on them so he took that off. How easy it would have been for Omar to leave that charge on their knowing full well we had already signed off on it because, once again, we know very little about cars. Needless to say, thanks to Omar we have found our families new mechanic. And he will be as long as we have cars and he is available. But I would imagine the more people that use him, the harder it is going to be to book him. Because everyone knows you cannot put a price tag on a damn good mechanic and that's exactly what we have found in Omar. Thank you Your Mechanic for sending us such an incredible representative of your company. You all should be very proud to have Omar on your team and representing your company the way he does. What a blessing he has been and will continue to be for the Zorovich family for many years to come. Along with ALL of our family, friends and colleagues...

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V8-5.3L - Fuel is leaking from gas tank - Palm Harbor, Florida
Called for a faulty fuel pump in my truck. Jean came out, diagnosed the real issue and it was just a busted line. Saved me money and time! I’ll never go back to a garage. Jean was professional, polite, and left the old part with me. The entire process from booking, to communication, down to the service provided was hands down the best I’ve ever experienced.
