What is the Windshield Washer Reservoir all about?

Windshield washers serve a simple yet extremely important purpose. A dirty windshield obstructs the driver’s view. They are important especially in very cold climates or in areas with a lot of dirt roads. The windshield washer reservoir holds the fluid that is sprayed onto the windshield. The windshield washer reservoir is usually made of a white, semi-transparent durable plastic and will often have a black or colored plastic cap. The capacity of the fluid reservoir depends on the make and model of your vehicle, but usually ranges from 1 to 1.5 gallons.

Keep in mind:

  • Frozen washer fluid is a big contributor to cracks in the reservoir.
  • Different washer fluids are approved for different seasons; make sure to use the correct season's fluid.
  • Repairs may slow the leaking, but most cracked reservoirs need to be replaced completely.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle hood is raised and secured in the open position
  • The windshield washer reservoir is unbolted from inner fender and removed
  • The washer lines are cleaned and flushed out
  • The new washer reservoir is connected and installed then filled with washer fluid
  • The wipers and washers are tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

Read your owner's manual to see if the manufacturer suggests certain fluids for certain reservoirs. For example, the reservoir to headlight-mounted washers may only take non-freezing fluid as the headlights do not get as warm as the windshield in cool weather. Have one of our expert mechanics inspect the whole windshield washer system when inspecting the reservoir. A reservoir with a crack should be replaced.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Windshield Washer Reservoir?

  • Low or no pressure when activating the washers
  • Fluid leaking out from under the vehicle
  • Filling the reservoir more often than usual
  • Sprayers don’t spray far enough on the windshield or do not spray enough fluid

How important is this service?

This service is fairly important to the average driver and very important to those in cold climates or in areas with lots of dirt roads. Both road salt and ice can obstruct a windshield without anti-freezing washer fluid in the reservoir. Dust and mud can become too thick to wipe away with just the wipers.

Buick Rendezvous V6-3.4L - Windows - Orlando, Florida
You truly want John to be "Your Mechanic". I'm an intern for the Disney College Program and am away from home, so when my window became stuck and wouldn't go up I started panicking. I was hesitant at first when I was shown Your Mechanic's website, but it turned out to be a great decision. First, the website gives you an incredible play-by-play of what's happening throughout the duration of booking and completing your appointment. Secondly, not only do they give you updates on your appointment, but for someone who doesn't know much about cars I appreciated the fact that they provide you with detail on what it is your car is having an issue with and its relation to your car as a whole. John was the best mechanic I could have hoped for. He was on time and got straight to work on my car. He was both friendly and proffesional as he examined my window and explained in detail what the problem was. He took his time to explain anything I had a question about which I greatly appreciated. Not only that but once he finished up with my original service he then gave me some maintenance suggestions about my car. Usually when this happens I get the feeling that the mechanic is trying to upsell me to get more work done - this was NOT the case with John. He explained the things that should be of higher priority and why they were so important while also telling me about some additional things that should get done but why they can stand to wait a little longer. He took his time and was very patient with me throughout the entire process and I couldn't be more grateful. Overall, I was nervous about giving Your Mechanic a chance but John completely squashed that nervousness as soon as he got here. His work was professional and his demeanor was incredibly friendly and courteous. I will definitely be requesting him WHEN I book my next appointment and will be referring him to anyone I meet. Thank you again, John, for your excellent service!

William did a great job installing the wheel bearing. I had to go to Firestone so they could loosen the lug nuts that were put on too tight and William waited till I got back. William was also very informative on what repairs my car needed. I will request William for future repairs.
