What to Expect:

For an AC system to work, it needs a gas or liquid substance called refrigerant (R-12 in older cars, R-134a in 1995 and newer cars). Over time, refrigerant can leak from the AC system through seals. If the AC does not have enough refrigerant, it will not blow cold air.

Keep in mind:

Since the AC system is a sealed unit, the only way to tell if the car needs a recharge is if the AC is not blowing cold air through the vents. There are two types of refrigerant. These cannot be interchanged. For older cars, it should be filled with R12 refrigerant or converted to a newer system. For cars made after 1995, the AC should be filled with R134a.

How it's done:

  • Install air conditioning manifold gauge set.
  • Determine if the air conditioning system charge is low.
  • Add the correct refrigerant to top off the air conditioning system.
  • Install thermometer in vents to monitor vent temperatures.
  • Check system for leaks.
  • Check for proper operation of AC system.

Our recommendation:

It is common for refrigerant to leak. If the AC is not as cold as you expect, then it is probably a good time to have the mechanic look at it. Lack of proper cold air can be an indication of other problems with AC (fan not working, AC compressor not working, etc.).

What are the common symptoms indicating you need an Car AC Repair?

  • AC is not working.
  • AC is not blowing cold air.
  • Clicking noise from the engine compartment.

How important is this service?

In addition to your comfort, air conditioning systems add value to your vehicle. You should keep your AC fully operational. In some systems, the hot and cold air are blended to achieve the desired temperature setting. In these cases, when the AC system fails, in addition to not getting any cold air, the entire temperature regulation can be thrown off.

I'm very glad he took a second look, when he came to fix the fuel pump. It wasn't the fuel pump, it was a wore that he was able to easily and cheaper replace than the fuel pump.

Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle will illuminate the reduced engine power warning light (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/warning-light-is-on-inspection) for many reasons. The throttle, a number of sensors, poor ignition, and many other factors can turn it on. If you have not...

Hello, my check engine light came on in my 2001 Chrysler town and country van 3.3 v6 the code reader sent me these codes p0302 cylinder 2 miss fire, po403 exhaust gas recirculation control circuit, po508 idle air control system circuit low. I changed all the spark plugs and wires and the coil pack, this made the car run good, but the idle speed was really low, so I took off the throttle body and idle air control valve and clean ed them really good. After I put it all back together now the van is idling really high 1500 to 2000 rpms. So by cleaning the throttle body and idle air control valve my van went from idling really low to really fast and I dont understand why. I researched the idle air control valve and one of the tips it said was there could be a vaccum leak that would cause the idle to run high. Would should I do? Replace the idle air control valve? Is there a way to tell if it needs to be replaced or maybe when i took it off the two o rings on it could be bad so would that cause a vaccum leak? Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
