The Best Used Cars to Buy If Safety is #1

Used Car for Safety

Maybe you’re a parent buying the first car for your teenager, or perhaps you’re a new parent and the safety of your little one is of the utmost importance. Or perhaps you're a safety-minded individual looking to make a well-informed decision. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, this list of cars is built with safety in mind.

Must-haves

Here are a number of criteria that may apply to you in your hunt:

  • The ability to accommodate multiple car seats
  • Plenty of air bags
  • A backup rearview camera
  • Seat belts that are adjustable
  • Antilock Brake System (ABS)
  • A heavy vehicle in order to offer more protection in a crash

Top five list

  • Kia Sedona EXT Minivan: Minivans have long since been a popular choice for families, and there’s good reason for that. Sure it’s easy to get in and out of, and offers plenty of passenger and cargo space, but in terms of the Kia Sedona EXT Minivan you also have added safety features. In the 2012 model you'll find front-side, front, and three-row side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, and of course electronic stability control.

  • Hyundai Santa Fe: As Kelley Blue Book points out, the Santa Fe broke into the market as an affordable SUV option. It has managed to stay that way while also offering the bells and whistles typically found in more luxurious brands. The 2012 model features downhill brake control (DBC) and electronic stability control, which is ideal for wet road conditions.

  • Subaru Legacy: The Subaru Legacy is meant to rival the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. The 2012 model features decent fuel economy, and a roomy interior. As far as safety features go it has symmetrical all-wheel drive, which comes in handy during the winter months, an electronic parking brake with hill-holder feature, front, and side-curtain airbags.

  • Chevrolet Malibu: If it is safety features you're after, the 2012 model of the Chevrolet Malibu has you covered. Take advantage of such features as the turn-by-turn navigation system, a well-lit interior, traction control, ABS, StabiliTrak stability control, and six air bags.

  • Toyota RAV4: As Kelley Blue Book points out, this model is known for its "excellent reliability,” among other things. Safety features include the Star Safety System, which is made up of five different safety features that are electronic. As well, it offers hill start and downhill assist control. The vehicle comes equipped with side-curtain air bags, and front side-impact air bags.
