A Buyer’s Guide to the 2012 Scion xD

Scion xD 2012

The 2012 Scion xD is designed to answer the needs of a younger crowd – those that want an affordable vehicle that is proven reliable, provides easy navigation in tighter quarters, and offers a unique design that is nothing like what mom and dad used to drive. While it doesn’t offer spectacular fuel economy for the class, it does a fine job of handling everyday driving around town.

Key Features

When it comes to features, this hatchback certainly delivers. Packed with a range of standard equipment that includes a Pioneer 160-watt sound system, keyless entry, active headrests in the front, six air bags and the electronic driving aids offered by the Star Safety System, the 2012 Scion xD packs quite a punch. With available options that are geared towards creating a customized ride, such as sport pedals and illuminated enhancements, drivers of all ages will have something to enjoy.

Changes for 2012

New additions for this model year include the Bluetooth Pioneer sound system as a standard feature. There is also a Release Series 4.0 option that features 16-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels, Blizzard Pearl paint and interior trim that matches the exterior.

What We Like

The abundant cargo space makes sure drivers and passengers alike have plenty of room. The engine also provides plenty of zip when driving in city traffic. We also like the fact that the audio system is customizable with an electroluminescent display.

What Concerns Us

While this is an economy class vehicle, the fuel economy is on the low side compared to other models available. Additionally, you should expect a bit of lag when trying to make your way up hills or overtaking other vehicles on the road. Some might find the starting price a bit steep as well, especially when added to the disappointing gas mileage.

Available Models

There is both an automatic and manual model available for the 2012 Scion xD. Both options use the same engine, which offers:

  • 1.8-Liter Inline-4
  • Horsepower: 128 @ 6,000 rpm
  • Torque: 125 @ 4,400 rpm
  • City/Highway Fuel Economy: 27/33 mpg

Major Recalls

There have been no major recalls issued for the 2012 Scion xD at this time.

Common Issues

There is only one complaint listed for this model year, and it relates to the vehicle catching fire after being in a slow speed front-impact crash. There is no other information available for the complaint.
