What is cleaning the throttle body all about?

In order to run efficiently and smoothly, your vehicle needs a fuel mixture that is a perfect combination of air and gas. The air intake system is responsible for providing the air part of this equation. The throttle body is the component of the air intake system that determines exactly how much air to let combine with the fuel. When the throttle body is dirty it’s unable to let the right amount of air into the engine.

Keep in mind:

  • The air intake ducts should be examined when the throttle body is cleaned.
  • When the throttle body is cleaned, the entire air intake system should be inspected.

How it's done:

  • Take the snorkle off the throttle body
  • Spray brake cleaner on the throttle plate
  • Scrub plate with a brush
  • Spray the brake cleaner again
  • Reconnect snorkle

Our recommendation:

Your entire air intake system should be thoroughly examined during routine maintenance and servicing. Consult your owner's manual to see how frequently your throttle body should be cleaned.

What is a common symptom indicating you need to clean the throttle body?

  • Racing noise from the engine

How important is this service?

The air intake system draws air from outside of the vehicle, and blends it with the gas to create the optimal fuel mixture for your vehicle. The throttle body is the part of this system responsible for controlling exactly how much air is added to the gas. When the throttle body gets dirty, it is unable to allow the optimum amount of air into the air intake system, and the air-gas equation will be incorrect. As a result, your engine will not run smoothly.

Toyota Celica L4-1.8L - Timing Belt - Lacombe, Louisiana
This was my first time using YourMechanic. I booked Chris to do a timing belt and water pump replacement on my car. Not only did he do an excellent job, he was also able to inform me of a few other things that needed to be taken care of on my car. He communicated with me well and explained everything to me thoroughly. Chris got me all taken care of for an affordable price and with great convenience to me. I would highly recommend this mechanic and will definitely contact him again in the future.
