Ignition Cable (Spark plug wires) Replacement Service & Cost

What is the Ignition Cable (Spark plug wires) all about?

The ignition cables, also known as “spark plug wires” are part of the ignition system. They transfer the spark from the distributor or ignition coil to spark plugs that ignite the air-fuel mixture, starting the engine.

Over time, the cables can get weak and break down. This will make it harder for the spark to reach the engine cylinders, resulting in engine misfires. The car may not start at all. If one of the spark plugs has gone bad, the car will still start and run, but it will run poorly.

Keep in mind:

  • Ignition cable failure is often caused by other failing pieces in the ignition system; a mechanic should check for any other malfunctioning parts, and replace any parts of the system that don’t work.
  • Every time the ignition cables are replaced, the spark plugs should be inspected.
  • Leaking oil or coolant can cause ignition wire failure. If this is the case, the cause of the leak should be repaired or replaced, or else the new ignition wires will quickly be damaged as well.

How it's done:

  • Scan the computer system in the car for codes.
  • Inspect ignition cables (look for white spots).
  • Ohm test on individual cables.
  • Remove and replace the cables if found faulty.
  • Inspect the spark plugs.
  • Clear the codes.

Our recommendation:

Ignition wires should be replaced at least every 60,000 miles, but whenever your car is serviced, it’s a good idea to have the entire ignition system inspected. Any time that you have spark plugs replaced, it’s a good idea to have the ignition wires replaced as well. If you notice that your engine is running poorly, you should schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Ignition Cable (Spark plug wires)?

  • Check Engine light is on.
  • Engine misfires.
  • Poor gas mileage.
  • Engine may shake (light vibration).

How important is this service?

The fuel in your automobile is ignited by a spark. This starts with the ignition coil, which transforms low voltage power into extremely high voltage. This high voltage is transferred through the ignition cables, and to the spark plug, where a spark is created that ignites the engine’s fuel, and powers the engine.

When one or more ignition cables fail, this voltage will not be transferred from the ignition coil to the spark plugs, and the fuel will not be ignited. Depending on how many of your ignition cables malfunction, your car will either run poorly, or won’t run at all.

Fast and easy Ignition Cable (Spark plug wires) Replacement service at your home or office.

This is the second time I have used YourMechanic and I requested Chris because he did such a good job with our first car. This time we needed new rack n pinion bushings on our 98 4Runner. Chris showed up on time. It was raining so we cleared a space partially in the garage. He didn't complain about the rain. After he started taking things apart he learned he had the wrong parts caused by a mix up with our VIN and the limitations of the web site when setting the appointment; but that didn't stop him, he quickly located the right part, went to pick it up and was back to finish the job. I appreciate that he didn't leave me with an un-driveable car but was determined to finish. It took longer than he thought, the old parts were a bear to get off because they were so old, but instead of charging me MORE, the job was LESS than quoted because the correct parts turned out to cost less then the incorrect parts. A pleasant surprise! I highly recommend both YourMechanic and Chirs

What a great concept! Less expensive car maintenance that doesn’t get more convenient than your car mechanic making a house call. Jeffrey was on time, professional & honest (as is his wife!). Not only did he change my timing belt but he took care of other eroding belts as well (while showing & explaining to me exactly what was wrong). I have finally found someone I trust to work on my car!

David was prompt and early . Asked what problem happened. And after telling it i told him what all i did in hopes problem a simple fix and told him what i thought problem was and let him do the checks and more. As he looked at items he pointed out items needing attention. Suggested best to deal with when in fixing i agreed with his suggestion on what all pointed out needing attention soon and had just put work in car costing near 700 bucks ! he was very understanding at my need for least amount of work possible, he worked with me on options explaining logistics getting refurbished part as to new genuine OEM part warranted differently. David was patient with my indecision on best to do, answering questions til a decision was made. All was finalized to be done on a day i would not have to take off to be home to handle what all necessary for me to do and addressed other items to get so he didnt need to charge for needed for repair and instead o job costing a whole lot if i brought in to mechanic. with me providing part, repair only labor being cost very pleasing was amount for his expert services. he left me with a smile and confidence in work to be done. I expected a much different visit with much higher price. Very glad for referral given by co worker to try yourmechanic.com.
