What is the Door Handle or Door Latch all about?

The car has at least two door handles per door: one on the inside and another on the outside. Due to frequent use, they will eventually break down and could need repair. Sometimes the handle itself is fine, but there is a problem with the door latch assembly that prevents the door from shutting and locking properly.

Keep in mind:

  • Sometimes the visible part of the door handle needs to be replaced, and sometimes the mechanism hidden inside the door needs to be replaced.
  • If the exterior door handle doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that the interior door handle is also faulty.
  • If physical damage (such as an accident) has caused the door handle to break, there may also be damage to the door lock switch or door lock actuator.

How it's done:

  • Remove the door panel to gain access.
  • Remove and replace the broken door handle.
  • Inspect door latch and replace if not working.
  • Check door for proper operation.
  • Reinstall door panel.

As soon as you notice that your door is having difficulty opening, you should schedule an inspection. If your exterior door handle stops working entirely, stop trying to use it: trying to force the door can cause further damage. If you notice that your exterior door handle is feeling fragile, you should also schedule an inspection.

Patrick provided the most pleasant experience I've ever encountered with a mechanic under normally very unpleasant circumstances. He's very knowledgeable at what he does and very willing to answer any questions. He balances the professional with being very personable really well. He made sure to call ahead of time to ask permission to arrive early instead of just showing up unexpectedly. On top of fixing my concern, he also briefly looked over my car and tended to minor details like a bent license plate and low tire pressure. Nothing like past experiences with typical mechanics who just want to quietly do their job, take your money and send you on your way with little explanation on what was done.
