What is the Starter Relay all about?

When you turn the key in your car’s ignition, a circuit is completed in the ignition switch. That electrical connection provides power to the starter relay, which then switches from its off position to ‘on’ for as long as the key is held in the start position. The starter relay passes power from the car battery to the starter solenoid, and the starter motor engages to start your car. If the starter relay sticks or fails while it is in the off position, your vehicle will not start or even click when the key is turned, although the interior accessories will still function. If the starter fails while turning the key, and is stuck in the on position, the starter will stay engaged with the transmission flywheel. Damage can occur to the transmission flywheel, the starter, the relay, and the circuit.

Keep in mind:

  • If your car isn’t starting, the starter relay is not necessarily at fault. There are several parts, including the battery, that can present the same symptoms as a failed starter relay.
  • Disconnect the car battery when servicing any electrical part to prevent damage or injury.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle battery is disconnected
  • The defective starter relay is removed
  • The new starter relay is installed
  • The vehicle battery is reconnected
  • The vehicle is started and checked for starter relay operation

Our recommendation:

The starter relay will likely last the lifetime of your vehicle, and does not require servicing. If the starter relay fails, or if you believe it is not working properly, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose it.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Starter Relay?

  • Car won’t start or turn over
  • Engine intermittently turns over and starts
  • Starter motor stays engaged all the time

How important is this service?

A working starter relay is necessary for the proper operation your car. You won’t be able to start your car if the starter relay fails, so you will have no choice but to fix the relay before using your vehicle again.

I had taken my car to firestone who over charges drastically. They also lost my tire lock. Lucky enough, Chet had the tool with him to take the keys off! So I got new sets for my tires for free because firestone lost mine and I got to have my brakes done! Thank you for your smart thinking! My brakes are working great!

I would first like to start by saying the reviews for Herman Ramos are not only accurate, but they do not match the quality, customer service and professionalism he possesses as a Your Mechanic repair agent. If I could give him 10 stars I would. Not only was he a half hour earlier than expected (early is on time and on time is late), but even in threatening weather he did not let that stop him. He politely stated "I have a raincoat so I will be okay". His service was quick and efficient. He started the job right away. As I had the service done while attending church, even the members asked what service was that. I proudly said Your Mechanic and that's Herman Ramos with a smile. The Your Mechanic service has definitely gained additional customers. All throughout the repair he really made me feel like he was my mechanic. Once the job was done he took it for a test ride in the parking lot to make sure the repair work met his standards. He even made sure to do a full check and give me things to look out for and be aware of. Never once attempting to charge extra or pressure me to do something more than what was paid for. He was thorough in his explanation, patient with my questions and knowledgeable. I would only recommend Herman Ramos for any job and will forever make sure he is the trusted and go to mechanic I use. After several visits to other repair shops and going in with the "what if thought", I now have the confidence of knowing that with Herman, he truly delivers.
