What is the Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Oil Control Valve all about?

A VVT solenoid is responsible for maintaining fuel economy by regulating the supply of oil to the VVT hub.

Keep in mind:

  • Low oil levels can also cause problems with the VVT solenoid and other timing system parts.
  • Each auto manufacturer has unique codes signifying an issue with the VVT solenoids, so it’s important to have a qualified technician diagnose your vehicle.

How it's done:

  • Disconnect the battery and locate the variable valve timing solenoid, and remove the mounting bolts.
  • Disconnect solenoid and remove the solenoid.
  • Lube the solenoid and apply the lithium grease to the seals on the solenoid spool.
  • Insert the solenoid into the mounting surface space.
  • Insert the mounting screws.
  • Fasten the engine cover.
  • Reconnect the battery.

Our recommendation:

When replacing the solenoid, you may experience a slight resistance but that means that the seals are properly fitted. To overcome the resistance, twist the solenoid slightly back and forth while pushing down to get it flush with the mounting surface.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Oil Control Valve?

  • Unstable or shaky idling
  • Check engine light may be illuminated
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Loss of power when accelerating

He was knowledgable and honest. He knew exactly what I was talking about and helped me figure out if I had a warranty on my problem (which he didn't need to do). He taught me stuff and showed me what was wrong. I was in good hands!
