What is the Brake Light Bulb all about?

Brake light bulbs are located at the back of the car, housed inside a protective covering (lens). The brake light turns on when you push the brake pedal, letting drivers know that you are slowing down. If the brake light does not illuminate, you’re at a higher risk for causing an accident and/or being pulled over and cited by a police officer.

Keep in mind:

Keep in mind the number of brake lights a car has can vary. The third (or rear window/center) brake light should not be overlooked when doing an inspection.

How it's done:

  • Inspect brake bulbs, sockets and wiring.
  • Replace the bulb, if faulty.
  • Check all the lights.

Our recommendation:

A mechanic should inspect the brake light during a major service. Before replacing a bulb, your mechanic should also inspect the socket and wiring. Due to the high amount of current flowing through these sockets, sometimes the sockets melt, causing the brake light to malfunction.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Brake Light Bulb?

  • Brake lights do not work when brake pedal is depressed.
  • Light Bulb warning light is illuminated on the dashboard.

How important is this service?

When you apply the brakes, your brake light bulb illuminates. This allows drivers behind you a warning that you are slowing down, so that they can slow down as well. A dead brake light bulb will never work, and your car will be devoid of this important safety feature. Not having working brake lights is also illegal, and can result in a hefty "fix-it" ticket.

Whitney is incredibly knowledgable and professional on the job. He pointed out precisely where the problems were and showed me, so I felt like I was learning about my own car by working with him. He's personable and professional--I feel like I can trust Whitney, unlike most car mechanics I've worked with in the past. I wish we had more mechanics like this around!

This man was the greatest, he was able to look at my car, not only find the problem that I was having but also took the liberty to drive me to Advanced Auto Parts and help me exchange the part I bought for the ones I needed and saved me a good 143 dollars. Even when the Advanced Auto Parts employee was giving me a hard time for the return, he stepped in and defended me and made sure that I was refunded the correct amount of money and made sure that if the store wasn’t going to do it he would find another store that will. Overall James is a great guy and most definitely would recommend to anyone in need of car assistance. If I could give him more than 5 stars I would. He deserves a raise.

Hey there. The fuel usage of 26L per 100km sounds like it is using too much fuel, or there is a problem with the display. I would suggest having a mechanic inspect the car first (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/pre-purchase-car-inspection) before you decide to...

I have a brand new car 2019 with 20,000 miles on it. The other day I was at a complete stop and my car started shaking, put it in park and back in drive and it stopped. Then today when I put it in park the rpms started going crazy and again car started shaking like it wanted to stall out or die.

I have an automatic AWD sedan.. My car won't move when in Reverse or Drive, it just revs. And when I go back into Park, it makes an extremely loud clacking noise. Like when you hold a fan while its still trying to spin.
