Power door locks are the most important security element of your vehicle. They keep potential thieves and burglars out of your car, and make it easy for you to lock and unlock your doors in a hurry. As a result, power door locks that don’t work are a little unnerving, as they spell an increased security threat for your vehicle.

How this system works:

The power door lock system is a relatively simple system. When you press the lock or unlock button (located on your key, or inside your vehicle), the power door lock sends a relay signal to the power door lock actuator. The actuator, through a series of gears, locks or unlocks the door or doors that you are controlling.

Common reasons for this to happen:

There are three primary components of the power door lock system that can fail, resulting in a useless power door lock:

  • Blown fuse: A fuse is a low resistance resistor that creates overcurrent protection. Essentially, the fuse takes a large amount of electrical current, and converts it into a smaller, more manageable amount of current that the door lock actuator can have. It’s not rare for fuses to blow, and when they do, electrical current will stop running to the door lock actuator, rendering the power door lock system useless.

  • Dead power door lock switch: The power door lock switch is a relatively simple rocker switch. It reacts to you pressing the lock or unlock button, and sends a simple signal to the actuator. Like light switches, the power door lock switch can die due to frequent use.

  • Malfunctioning power door lock actuator: The power door lock actuator is the part of the power door lock system that actually controls the locks. The actuator is a series of gears, with a set of rack and pinion gears at the end. When the actuator gets the signal from the power door lock switch, a small motor turns the gears. The rack and pinion are able to convert the rotational motion of the motor to a vertical motion, which locks and unlocks the doors. Like the power door lock switch, the power door lock actuator can malfunction due to the large amount of use that it gets.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the cause of the power door lock that isn’t working, and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs.

How it's done:

A mechanic can often tell by the sound whether the problem lies with the fuse, the power door lock switch, or the power door lock actuator. After determining the problem with the system, the malfunctioning piece will be replaced. In rare instances a broken power lock actuator can be repaired, but usually any part of this system will need to be replaced if it isn’t working properly.

How important is this service?

Power door locks are one of the most important facets of your vehicle’s security system. Without a properly working power door lock system, your vehicle is a security liability wherever it is.

Mercedes-Benz C320 V6-3.2L - Power door locks are not working - Phoenix, Arizona
I have had a bad experience with Your Mechanic from the very beginning. I'm a first time customer. I scheduled my very first appt. with Your Mechanic. 30 min past the scheduled time YM was suppose to be at my place, I get a text saying he won't be able to make it. So I rescheduled for the next available time which was 3 days later. I get another cancellation notice from YM. At this point I was really disappointed and frustrated I had made special arrangements to be available for both scheduled appts. Finally He shows up 30 min past the scheduled appt, He does a inspection on my issue, looks at it then tells me he cant work on it wrong part.. So he finished up. He told me that I should only be charged $25 or $30 dollars for this appt. He spent less than an hour. He assured me he put in his notes to YM to adjust my account accordingly. Well of course my account was not adjusted to reflect that amount. So I called customer service at YM and spoke with Paul Who put in for a refund and expedite my claim. Said it would be 24-48 hours. before I would receive a response from YM management. I have had to go through so much unnecessary drama just to have a mechanic look at my car issues. To be honest this is not a very good first impression I have of YM. Robert was nice and seem to know what needed to be done for my car. But my experience with YM has been bad from the start and I am not pleased at all. I just would like my refund and that will be all I would like to hear from YM.

5 stars are not enough to rate Chris. He arrived on time, extremely knowledgeable, patient with my curiosity, polite answering all my questions, thorough and detailed in his work and, overall, impressive. I've been to endless auto shops and mechanics which either resulted in temporary or partial satisfaction, or even disappointment. This was my experience today with Yourmechanic.com, and, in particular, with Chris Allshouse: I made an appointment for half dozen (or so) misc inspection services for $200 to find out any and all possible issues that needed to be fixed - which Chris pointed out and explained (to a person who knows basically nothing about cars) in layman's terms. He first mentioned I needed new battery and some random fuses/etc as well as tune-up in near future (after I put some more miles on car). Of course my first worry and response was how much more will this cost me, but was delightfully surprised and immediately told not to worry because when I (a customer) pays for "inspection" service appointment, that money is credited toward any future repairs/work done on my car - LOVED IT! I only had to pay few dollars more to get some work done, new battery with install, fuses and more!! As for the tune-up, Chris explained each little thing needed in regards to the tune-up rather than just telling me I need a "tune-up" which could mean I needed a bunch of things done (that are most likely not even necessary). To sum up my review, and end my rambling, I randomly stumbled upon Yourmechanic.com a long time ago. I think It took me two years, maybe even more, to finally drop my skepticism and make an appointment with Yourmechanic.com, yet, because of Chris Allshouse, it took less than a minute to feel confident and excited to set up follow up appointment (as well as request to service my other car). Chris was very personable and easy to talk to. He was very informative and took the time to explain everything to me. I highly recommend him. For the first time, the results were different and with only one afterthought…What took me so long to make this decision!
