What is the Clutch Cable Adjuster all about?

The clutch cable adjuster helps to keep the tension on the clutch cable so that the clutch pad does not slip while in operation. Depending on the make, model, and year of the vehicle, you will find either a manual or automatic cable adjuster.

The clutch cable is comprised of an inner cable sliding in an outer sheath. The clutch cable adjuster is found either underneath the vehicle where it enters the clutch or at the vehicle firewall where it enters the vehicle ending at the gear box.

For vehicles with a manual cable adjuster, one of our expert mechanics can adjust the cable for clearance if needed, giving the cable the required amount of free play before it moves the lever. Sometimes, though, the cable might become stretched or the adjuster worn or broken, requiring replacement.

Keep in mind:

  • In addition to inspecting your vehicle’s clutch cable adjuster, one of our expert mechanics will check the other cable components to make sure they are in proper working order.
  • If the problem persists, the mechanic might have to check the transmission and clutch to see if the problem lies in one of those components.
  • Regardless of the type of adjuster, manual or automatic, checking and adjusting the cable on a regular basis allow a mechanic to catch any problems before they get worse.

How it's done:

  • The battery is disconnected. The trim panel above clutch pedal is removed.
  • The defective cable adjuster is disconnected from the clutch pedal adjusting arm and removed.
  • The new clutch cable adjuster is installed and connected to clutch pedal arm.
  • The clutch is adjusted and tested to make it operates smoothly without binding. Trim panel installed.
  • The battery is reconnected and the vehicle is road tested to ensure proper operation of the clutch and clutch pedal.

Our recommendation:

Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule when having a mechanic service your clutch cable adjuster and other clutch components. This includes checking the cable and the adjuster roughly every 6,000 to 10,000 miles, or about every other oil change.

If needed, one of our expert mechanics will grease the cable to ensure it continues to perform properly. The mechanic will also adjust the cable, using the adjuster, if necessary.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Clutch Cable Adjuster?

  • Clutch pedal feels heavy
  • Clutch slips while in use
  • Vehicle fails to go into gear

How important is this service?

Replacing the clutch cable adjuster when you first notice slippage is important, as a faulty adjuster can interfere with the vehicle going into gear properly and can even cause clutch failure. If you experience problems with your clutch cable, have one of our expert mechanics inspect your vehicle and fix any issues you might have before the problem grows worse.
