What is the Speed Sensor all about?

Located on the transmission case, within the rear differential assembly or inside the ABS system, the vehicle speed sensor reads the speed of the wheel rotation on a vehicle while driving. The sensor also helps the vehicle maintain stability while driving by telling the computer when to release pressure to a wheel while using the ABS.

A type of tachometer, the part consists of a toothed ring and pickup. The speed sensor reads the rotational speed of the reluctor wheel, located within the transmission. Speed sensors within the differential use a trigger wheel mounted in conjunction with the ring gear to accomplish the same tasks as those performed by the transmission-mounted version.

Keep in mind:

The mechanic will run a diagnostic on the vehicle to find the exact cause of the problem.
A faulty speed sensor sometimes produces symptoms similar to a failing transmission.
The mechanic will check the transmission.
Some vehicles use the information from the sensor to help determine ride height, a feature in newer vehicles.
The mechanic will check all connections to make sure everything remains connected properly.

How it's done:

The speed sensor is verified that it needs to be replaced. The vehicle is lifted and supported on jack stands.
The speed sensor is located in the rear axle. The speed sensor is removed from the rear axle housing.
The new speed sensor is installed into the axle housing.
The speed sensor connector is connected. The vehicle is removed from the jack stands.
The vehicle is road tested and scanned for proper operation of the speed sensor.

Replace a faulty speed sensor as soon as possible to avoid further damages on your vehicle. The speed sensor also controls the anti-lock braking system. Driving with a bad speed sensor usually causes the ABS to malfunction and can lead to loss of braking power and/or an accident. The speed sensor likewise affects the transmission, causing it to perform erratically.

First time using "Your Mechanic" at first I was very excited to be able to maneuver thru the website easily and create an appt. and my first appt was set for today with Moses. I scheduled it on the 19th so waiting a few days wasn't too bad for me, but because it's a commercial vehicle I really wanted it done as soon as possible. Called in to speak with the dispatch yesterday the day before my appt. and mentioned wanting it as soon as possible, so if they had a cancellation, to please notify me. Well today, I received an email was a I'm sorry, but we have to cancel your appt. due to mechanic having a family emergency. (which I understand, it happens) but of course I was disappointed, but I immediate followed the prompts to reschedule my appt through the app, and boom no appointments till Friday afternoon! Bummer, well I immediately called the customer service center and spoke to a rep who was very helpful, after checking with all the techs, no one was available any sooner, but he tried, and for that I was grateful, so the csr actually went ahead and rescheduled my appt. for Friday and gave me a 10% discount to help with the inconvenience. I accepted and thanked him. But the very good news comes in later today, when getting a phone call from my mechanic "William" saying, Hey I'm done a little early today and can get you squeezed in and can arrive in 15 minutes to help you with your starter replacement. Whoa!!! Was I so ever surprised and completed STOKED!! "Yes of course and thank you!", I told him. After he completed the repairs, he gave me a courtesy call and explained that everything was done and that he left my core in the box in the front seat of our vehicle ready to take back for credit. I'm completely satisfied and very happy on how everything ended up and now we can get our A/C van back on the road to help others in need! Thank you William! You Da Man! This was a great experience, I will be using them again in the future, going to see what else they can help me with! God Bless!! #TheAirConditioningLady
