What is the Fuel Filler Neck all about?

The fuel filler neck is a part that connects the gas cap and the fuel tank. It may be a metal hose that is soldered to the fuel tank, or a rubber hose that uses hose clamps to hold the neck to the gas tank. When the neck is metal, it is made of lightweight aluminum, steel or chrome plating. Modern necks are powder-coated to increase their lifespan. While they are designed to be long-lasting, corrosive chemicals can cause them to wear and rust over time. They will develop holes and cracks that allow the fuel to leak out. Not only does this create a fire hazard, but it allows dust and debris to seep inside and reduce the performance of your vehicle. Accidents or collisions can also damage the fuel filler neck. While it can be temporarily patched with an adhesive, replacement is often the better long-term fix.

Keep in mind:

  • A leaking fuel filler neck is a fire hazard.
  • Fuel vapors are dangerous when they leak
  • The fuel filler neck should have a 45-degree angle tilt
  • The neck must have the correct diameter to fit the opening of the fuel tank

How it's done:

  • The vehicle is raised and supported on jack stands and wheel is removed
  • The inner fender is removed and defective filler neck is removed
  • The new fuel filler neck is installed and the inner fender installed
  • The vehicle is removed from the jack stands
  • The vehicle is road tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

If you smell fuel vapors or suspect your fuel filler neck is leaking, have our expert mechanics look at it. They will inspect it for cracks, leaks, and other types of damage. They may also check the seal around the neck to make sure it is working properly. A replacement fuel filler neck will take care of the problem and provide a protective seal.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Fuel Filler Neck?

  • Smell of fuel when you fill up the vehicle
  • Fuel spills under the car when you fill up
  • Lower gas mileage or poor performance

How important is this service?

Because a leaking fuel filler neck can be a fire hazard, you should have it checked and repaired promptly. If you notice a change in mileage on your vehicle or a puddle of fuel when you fill up your gas tank, have a mechanic inspect your fuel system, including the fuel filler neck. Poor fuel economy is costly and adds up over time.

Ford Crown Victoria V8-4.6L - Strut Assembly Replacement (Front) - San Marcos, Texas
Mr. Gonzales was more detailed in his assessment of the vehicle. He explained step by step his process, and what needed to be and how it needed to be done. Mr. Gonzales found other issues that should have been reported by the first mechanic which caused additional expense to us on this trip. His behavior and attitude was above expectation and he arrives early to start the process and moved expeditiously to complete the job without hindrance or confusion.

Ford Crown Victoria V8-4.6L - Window Motor / Regulator Assembly Replacement (Passenger Side Front) - Carrollton, Texas
Edmar arrived on time and finished within the estimated time. Not only does my window work flawlessly, but he cleaned up the area so that you can't even tell he had been there. His vehicle inspection identified everything I knew the car needed, along with a couple of other things I suspected. Very professional and courteous. I recommend Edmar, and plan to use him again.

Ford Crown Victoria V8-4.6L - Ball Joint Front Replacement (Upper Left, Upper Right) - Beltsville, Maryland
Robert was very professional. Without a mechanic shop he had some limitations and was not able to replace the lower ball joints because they were apparently frozen in place. However, we were only charged for the work that was done and the price was very reasonable compared to the prices charged at the dealership. Also, Robert provided information that was useful to me regarding the condition of the rotars which I had been told needed to be resurfaced and apparently do not.
