What is the Coolant Temperature Switch (Sensor) all about?

The coolant temperature switch, also called the coolant temperature sensor, is a switch that reads the engine coolant temperature and sends a signal to the engine control module, or ECM, to control other functions of engine operation such as the air-fuel ratio.

It is also called a switch because on some cars, it is used to turn on the engine cooling fan at a specific temperature. This aids in the engine warm-up process as well as keeping the engine at a safe operating temperature.

Keep in mind:

  • The coolant temperature switch is a crucial part of the cooling system. If faulty, it can cause severe internal engine damage due to overheating, incorrect air-fuel ratio, or incorrect ignition timing. It can also cause shorter life to the cooling fan motor or other electrical components of the cooling system.
  • Some vehicles are equipped with a separate sensor to display the engine temperature to the driver via the temperature gauge.

How it's done:

  • The Coolant Temperature Switch is verified that it needs to be replaced. The coolant is drained until the switch is exposed.

  • The defective Coolant Temperature Switch is removed by disconnecting the connector and removing it from the manifold.

  • The new Coolant Temperature Switch is installed into the mounting hole in the manifold and the electrical connector is reconnected. The coolant is then refilled.

  • The Coolant Temperature Switch is tested for operation, codes cleared, and retested to ensure all codes have been resolved.

  • The vehicle is road tested to ensure proper operation of the Cooling System.

Our recommendation:

If you suspect that your coolant temperature switch has failed, have one of our licensed mechanics come out immediately to diagnose the problem.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Coolant Temperature Switch (Sensor)?

  • Check Engine light on
  • Engine overheating
  • Cooling fan runs intermittently
  • Engine misfires, stalls, or idles roughly
  • Erratic coolant temperature

How important is this service?

This part, when faulty, could cause the fan to run intermittently or not at all, which in turns causes overheating or overuse of the cooling fan motor. Whenever overheating occurs, severe engine damage is a possibility.

The engine air-fuel ratio is what keeps it running smoothly. If the ratio gets skewed, the engine will have poor fuel economy and run poorly or not at all. The coolant temperature switch is important because it gives the ECM the information it needs to make this calculation and run the engine optimally. YourMechanic will be able to tell you if this part is performing correctly.

Chevrolet Suburban 1500 V8-5.3L - Car is not starting - San Francisco, California
First and foremost, I would give David extra stars or a higher rating. Second, let me start of by saying I am your stereotypical female when it comes to cars. I can check the oil, fill the gas tank, and see if my tire needs air and that is about it. And I will believe everything and anything a "mechanic" tells me is wrong with my car. I once went to get my tired rotated and walked away carless and $1,000.00+ bill. How? I do not know. A week ago I was referred to your facebook page, two nights ago my car battery pooped out on me and yesterday I called the friend, Nico Rodriguez, who reffered me to it. Turns out hes an employee of this fine establishment. Anyway, in no time, I got the appointment set up and next thing i know, I have a call from David saying he is one job away from mine and will be at my house between 3 - 3:30. I was informed when he was on his way, and he was not a minute late! Timing is very important in my house, because I time everything around my baby's nap and eating schedule. Right away I felt comfortable and i very vaguely explained what had happened and what I thought was wrong. He asked questions without being intimidating and got right to work. I went out to check up on him and he explained very clearly, in plain english, what he had done and what he was doing to isolate the problem. I was ecstatic that he was finally getting to the root of the problem. A little later he informed me that he could either get the part and come back tomorrow or just finish the job tonight. I explained how I needed to be in Santa Cruz and Tahoe this coming week and he was more than understanding. With no hesitation or complaining he got the job finished and again, explained very thoroughly what the problem was and how he fixed it. I was so relived and for it all to happen at my front door was just amazing. Honestly I hesitated to go through this company, but I am so happy that i did. Nico and David made this such an easy experience, and I am thrilled how resonably priced the job was. I will never ever go with another mechanic or another company. I highly recommend this to women ( and men) who hate garages, this is a way to avoid all the bad customer service and unreasonably high prices. Thank you so much for being amazing! We will be calling ya'll soon, seeing as we have 5 cars that need tending to.
