What is the Ball Joint Rear all about?

Rear ball joints are a key part of your vehicle’s suspension system. The ball joints connect the control arm assembly (part of the chassis) to the steering knuckles (part of the wheels). The ball joints serve two purposes: they allow the wheels to steer and they allow the suspension to move freely. The rear ball joint acts nearly identically to the ball joints found in your shoulders and knees; they allow two separate components to operate both independently and together.

Keep in mind:

  • It’s a good idea to replace all of the ball joints at once.
  • In some cars the control arm blocks the ball joint and will need to be replaced as well.
  • After having your ball joints replaced, you should take your vehicle to a mechanic to have the wheels aligned. Mobile mechanics do not have the equipment needed to perform wheel alignments.

How it's done:

  • Remove the wheels.
  • Remove the control arm(s).
  • Remove and replace ball joints;
  • Check the entire suspension system for any problems.

Our recommendation:

Whenever your vehicle is being serviced or having routine maintenance, you should ask for the suspension to be inspected. During a major service, make sure that your ball joints are lubricated, as this will increase their lifespan. If you notice anything wrong with your wheels or suspension, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Ball Joint Rear?

  • Steering wheel is shaky.
  • Car drifts to one side or the other.
  • Rear tires make loud noises and have abnormal wear.
  • Suspension makes odd noises.

How important is this service?

The rear ball joints connect the control arm assembly to the steering knuckles, and help the suspension and wheels work smoothly. The rear ball joints help your wheels steer, so as the ball joints are damaged, your car may begin to have steering problems. The rear ball joints also allow the suspension to move, which protects both the suspension and the chassis. Damaged rear ball joints result in a vehicle that is dangerous to drive, and upon driving, can cause further damage to other parts of your car.

Chevrolet Blazer V6-4.3L - Fuel Pump - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Was on time, call me to let me know he was on his way and time aloted to be there, arrived ,hand shake greeting, explain to me what he was going to do to the vehicle and checked to make sure that the issue I was having ,was the problem and nothing else. Went right too work on my fuel pump, no questions asked, had all the tools ready to do the job, covered the ground for any spills, love those orange rubber gloves he was wearing to keep his hands clean, and all his tools were even clean, and observe his work habits, he even explain what he was going too do and when the gas tank was down ,and out, he show me the old part and the new OEM for the car, and just watching him work gave me a chill up my spine to see that he really cares about what he does and I was proud of somebody that took pride in there work. I offer him something to drink, like coffee or h2o, or soda, but he says he come prepared and doesn't want to waste any time and finish and make me happy, which iwas very highly satisfield with all he did and the price was right inn range .He was a not stop machine and never complain.but most off all , love watching and love how he explain all he was doing.I love watching people do there jobs, and said ,"I hope you don't mind me watching you" and he said , no problem. Well, I said my piece of mind and will use him and pass his name on to my friends and he has a future working on my cars (3) .. Last , but not lease, I will never use any garage maint. and in the future, will have Your Mechanic do all my service....
