What is the Windshield Wiper Linkage all about?

Windshield wipers give the driver a clear view of the road ahead. In order to clear rain from the windshield effectively, the wipers are synced up to move water off to the sides. In order to get power to the wiper arms and to keep the wipers synchronized, the windshield wiper linkage is needed. The linkage allows power from the wiper motors to get the wiper arms.

Keep in mind:

  • Some windshield wiper linkages use many components, while others use as little as one bracket.
  • Having more pieces may or may not make the wiper assembly more prone to breaking.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle hood is raised and secured in the open position
  • The wiper linkage bolts are loosened and removed.
  • The wiper linkage is removed
  • The new wiper linkage is installed and properly lubricated
  • The wipers are tested for proper operation

When issues come up with your windshield wipers, it's commonly an indication that the windshield wiper linkage is broken or otherwise in poor operating condition. This should be addressed right away. When the mechanic is diagnosing the issue, he/she can inspect the wiper motor and the points at which the linkage attaches to the motor and wiper arms. My experience with Joseph was great. I learned a lot, as I did not know where Audi hid the battery (the task today was to replace the battery), or that there is an air compressor to fill the spare tire should I need, or how the panels, compartments, tools, spare tire and miscellaneous items under the rear floor are removed and reinstalled. I would not have learned the above ‘secrets’ the easy way without the help of Joseph and Your Mechanic. I avoided the cost of towing my SUV to the dealer or other auto repair shop, and sitting in the customer waiting area when I could have learned more. Joseph is a nice guy with skills.
