A Buyer’s Guide to the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Volkswagen GTI 2012 The 2012 Volkswagen GTI has a good suspension offering a smooth drive on any type of pavement. The interior feels luxurious because of the high quality materials used for the seats and the overall unique design of the vehicle. It also has comfortable front seats and lots of room for passengers and luggage. The GTI is the perfect vehicle to get you through the work week and any weekend errands without breaking the bank while filling up the gas tank.

Key Features

The GTI has a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that offers 200 hp with a six speed manual transmission. It has 207 pound-feet of torque along with side curtain airbags, front airbags, stability and traction control, and antilock disc brakes. Fuel economy for this vehicle is 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

Changes for 2012

What We Like

The hatchback design offers versatility while the interior provides a feel of sophistication. The GTI gets good fuel economy saving money at the pump while still offering a smooth ride. It also has lots of safety features and good roof strength tests earning it a “good” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing.

What Concerns Us

Vehicles in the same class as the Volkswagen GTI are somewhat faster and a little better at handling. The GTI also lacks interior storage when compared to its competitors. If you are looking for something a little faster with more power, the GTI may not be the right vehicle for you.

Available Models

The standard GTI includes 18-inch alloy wheels, heated outside mirrors, leather steering wheel, sport suspension, power accessories, and cruise control. By upgrading to the Convenience and Sunroof package, you will receive a sunroof, touchscreen interface, multifunction steering wheel controls, and a CD changer. Add the Navigation options and you will have LED running lights, a touchscreen navigation system, and xenon headlamps.

Major Recalls

The Volkswagen GTI was recalled due to the debris being able to contaminate the mechanisms that keep the airbag powered while the steering wheel is being used. If debris contaminates this, it can result in the loss of electrical connection preventing the airbag from being deployed during a crash.

Common Issues

The most common complaints for the GTI include the engine blowing, the clutch slipping, and the clutch completely going out.
