What is the Engine Mount all about?

An engine mount, made of rubber and steel, has two purposes. One, it secures the engine and transmission to the frame of the car, and two, it absorbs the road shocks and engine vibrations so that the driver does not feel any engine movement. Transmission mounts secure the transmission.

Most cars have multiple engine and transmission mounts. If one of the mounts breaks, you will feel significant engine movement (vibrations and/or shaking).

Keep in mind:

  • Do not drive your car for too long with broken engine or transmission mounts. It can cause severe damage to the axle shafts and transmission.
  • Some engine mounts contain oil that may leak if a mount is damaged.

How it's done:

  • Identify the broken mount.
  • Remove and replace the mount.

Engine mounts are not typically checked during general maintenance, but they’ll be one of the first things checked if you report the symptoms mentioned here. What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Engine Mount?

  • Engine or transmission movement, with bumping or clunking noises.
  • Loud noise when you put the car in gear.
  • Vibration when accelerating or driving uphill.
  • You will feel a movement in the engine compartment when driving the car.
  • Oil leaking from damaged mount (only in case of fluid filled mounts).

How important is this service?

Engine mounts hold your engine and transmission in place. The mounts absorb the shocks of the road and the vibration of the engine and transmission, and keep these two elements securely in place. When a mount brakes, the engine and transmission are less secure, and they’re subject to a higher amount of vibration and shock. HE DID COME ONTIME BUT HE ONLY STAY ABOUT LESS THAN 30 MIN. AND HE TOLD ME ABOUT GAS LEAK WHICH I ALREADY KNOW AND THE COOLANT LEAK HE SAYS THE PART IS COST 450 FOR THE GAS LEAK BUT HE DIDDNT TELL ME HOW MUCH FOR THE COOLANT LEAK AND I ASK HIM TO EMAIL ME THE RESULTH OF THE DIAGNOSTIC SO I WOULD KNOW THE NAME OF THE PART HE SAID HE WILL BUT ITS BEEN MORE THAN 2 WEEKS NOW I HAVE NOT RECIEVE ANY. I PAY 60.00 DIAGNOSTIC THAT HAVE NOT GIVING ME A PAPER FOR WHAT IS DIANOSE FOR. NOW IM STILL TAKING MY CAR TO A REAL MECHANIC AND THE SAME THING I HAVE TO PAY FOR DIAGNOSE ANOTHER 60 DOLLORS BECAUSE IF I HAVE THE RECEIPT OR PAPER WORK FROM DAVID THEN I DONT HAVE TO PAY A SECOND DIAGNOSTIC.

Yesterday, for the 1st time, my 2016 KIA Sorento check engine light came on. I was getting ready to leave which I seldom go anywhere and saw it. The car drove as normal, I only went a short distance to pick up food. This morning I called dealer and they can't get me in until March 1st. I went to get a diagnostic read from O'Reillys (it is right behind my building) and code p0171 came up. They recommended using fuel system cleaner. I came home, pulled in the garage as normal cut car off. No problem. However, before I put the cleaner in, I tried to cut my truck back on again (not even sure why just a feeling) and it wouldn't start. All the lights worked on the inside and outside of truck but I noticed, in addition to check engine light, the battery and oil light were now on. This is so all of a sudden. Last oil change was 11/18, everything was well then. I keep it in my garage, barely drive due to quarantining etc. It is weird after the diagnostic test was ran, this happens. Any ideas on what it may be or why it happened so suddenly?
