What is the Brake Rotor/Disc all about?

A brake rotor is a smooth metal disc attached to the wheel hub. Most new cars (1999 and above) come with rotors at each wheel. Older cars may have drums instead of rotors at the rear wheels . Brake rotors play an important part in the braking system. It is the friction between brake pads and rotors that cause your car to slow down and stop. As the rotors wear out (become thin or warped), they are unable to dissipate the heat caused by the braking system. This will cause the brake fluid to boil and reduce the effectiveness of brake system significantly.

Keep in mind:

Brake rotors are replaced in pairs. If you choose front brake rotors, both front wheels will get new rotors. This service comes with brake pads. Unless brake pads were replaced recently, pads must be replaced while replacing the rotors.

How it's done:

  • Measure the thickness of brake rotors.
  • Remove and replace rotors and pads.
  • Perform a brake safety inspection.
  • Perform test drive.

Our recommendation:

It is a good idea to get the thickness of brake rotors measured annually. Your mechanic should measure the rotor thickness every time the brake pads are replaced. Brake rotors usually last twice as long as brake pads, which usually means you need to replace rotors every other brake service. If you drive the car with worn-out brake pads for too long, you will destroy the rotors.

  • Vibration or pulsation when applying brakes.
  • Blue discoloration of rotor surface.
  • Grooves or hot spots in rotors.

Tavaris listened thoughtfully to a history of the problem, then checked logical possibilities, and found the culprit in a matter of minutes. Coming back to change out the starter and do some much-needed maintenance that I actually asked for, i.e., not trying to sell me stuff, tho did observe some issues I wasn't aware of, which I was glad to add to the list. Tavaris answered questions and explained things well, even tho, as it turned out, he was having a difficult day himself - a nice guy.

Hello, so. I recently bought a 2nd hand car. there was a strong smell of a mixture of things including smoke. also a broken ac compressor. I replaced the seats, cleaned the carpets and once aired out there's not much smell. When I drive however, the smell becomes more prominent, it's a smell that makes me feel somewhat sleepy/unpleasent like my bodies not supposed to breath it in. Does this sound like the A/C? I assumed so and so used a A/C cleaning spray in the part where the cabin filter goes, the outside intake and up the drain bit under the glovebox (mazda 3, 2014). The smell seemed to go.I noticed however, even though I had the A/C running for 20-30 mins there wasn't as much water draining on the bottom as I thought, maybe 10ml. Also today (24 hours later) I went for a drive and the smell is coming back a little.what do you think is causing the smell? How should I fix it? Do you think my a/c drain is slightly blocked, or maybe the tray isn't tilted correctly (handyman at work mentioned something about a tray)? A bit lost with what to do!Sorry for the long story!
