What is the Wiper Gearbox all about?

Your windshield wipers remove water, snow and other impediments, allowing you to see the road ahead clearly. Windshield wiper systems require linkages and a gearbox to drive them at the preset rate (intermittent, low, high, etc.). It is generally located at the base of the windshield, under the hood and the cowling. The gearbox is directly connected to the wiper arm linkage that causes the windshield wiper pivots to turn and wipe the window. The gears inside the gearbox are subject to wear, though the usual failure is due to operation with excess weight on the wiper arms such as snow. This causes the internal gears to bind, bend or strip.

Keep in mind:

  • Once a gearbox sees significant wear, wipers will not function optimally and eventually stop working altogether.
  • Replacing the wiper blades is a good idea anytime a wiper system component needs repair.

How it's done:

  • The wiper arms are removed from the wiper gear box
  • The cowl is removed to access the wiper gear box
  • The defective wiper gear box is removed and the new one installed
  • The cowl is reinstalled and the wiper arms are installed onto the gear box
  • The wipers are tested to work in all positions

The wiper gearbox is a sealed system and cannot be serviced in most instances. When it malfunctions or show signs of failure, replacement is necessary. Russell did another job on my truck. My radiator was corroded and leaking. He changed it out and my water pump, too. Truck feels like it can breathe a lot better now. First of all he was on time, that, "really impressed me" He was extremely informative as I asked many questions and he answered them all. My truck was stalling and vibrating...well, no more, she is puring like a kitten and got me to work today, safely. In addition, Whitney O. is very fast and uses his tool like the master he is. He showed me how to read my oil gage, correctly as I had put to much oil in my car...which did not enhanced my truck's performance...therefore, I learned a huge lesson (Even though I thought I knew how to decipher how much oil...but I was wrong). Another factor that impressed me was when he put my hood up he stopped and touch the engine as if he was a doctor examing his patient; I really appreciated that because that is how I treat my truck...as my friend. Additionally, he showed me what new parts I should get for my truck to enhance her performance: best antifreeze, the best gas, and the best oil to use for my truck. After the job was completed he test drove the truck and he also had me test drive her. Suffice to say, he was a very competent gentlemen. I am happy and he definitely is the mechanic I have been looking for, for the past two years. I would, and have referred him in a "New York minute. Thank you guys so much. Rosanna
