What is the Crankshaft Position Sensor all about?

Many newer cars have computerized engine management systems that rely on sensors to report data to the computer. The crankshaft position sensor is used in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to control ignition timing and to let the computer know when to inject fuel and provide spark sequence. Due to the mounting locations of this sensor, it is common for heat and oil leaks to cause this sensor to fail.

Keep in mind:

  • Damage to the crankshaft position sensor is sometimes caused by leaking oil, which means there may be another component of your vehicle that needs replacement or repair.
  • The electrical connector can also be damaged, and should be inspected every time the position sensor is replaced.

How it's done:

  • Scan the car for trouble codes.
  • Remove and replace crankshaft position sensor.
  • Clear trouble codes.
  • Check for the proper operation of the car.

Our recommendation:

The crankshaft position sensor will usually let you know when it needs replacing. The Check Engine warning light will illuminate and you may notice that your vehicle has a hard time starting or running smoothly. When you notice any of these signs, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor?

  • Car does not start.
  • Check engine light is on.
  • Car misfires (car runs rough).

How important is this service?

The crankshaft position sensor relays critical information to your vehicle’s computer management system. The sensor provides the management system with the information it needs to control ignition timing, and it lets the computer know when it needs to provide sparks and fuel. Without a functioning crankshaft position sensor, the computerized management system doesn’t receive this critical information, and the vehicle will either not start, or will misfire while you’re driving it.

Nissan Pickup L4-2.4L - Check Engine Light is on - Santa Clara, California
First of all he was on time, that, "really impressed me" He was extremely informative as I asked many questions and he answered them all. My truck was stalling and vibrating...well, no more, she is puring like a kitten and got me to work today, safely. In addition, Whitney O. is very fast and uses his tool like the master he is. He showed me how to read my oil gage, correctly as I had put to much oil in my car...which did not enhanced my truck's performance...therefore, I learned a huge lesson (Even though I thought I knew how to decipher how much oil...but I was wrong). Another factor that impressed me was when he put my hood up he stopped and touch the engine as if he was a doctor examing his patient; I really appreciated that because that is how I treat my truck...as my friend. Additionally, he showed me what new parts I should get for my truck to enhance her performance: best antifreeze, the best gas, and the best oil to use for my truck. After the job was completed he test drove the truck and he also had me test drive her. Suffice to say, he was a very competent gentlemen. I am happy and he definitely is the mechanic I have been looking for, for the past two years. I would, and have referred him in a "New York minute. Thank you guys so much. Rosanna

Nissan Pickup L4-2.4L - Car is not starting - Jacksonville, Florida
Joel was awesome!! I wish your system would allow me to rate him will 11 stars!!! He showed up on time if not a few minutes early and got right to work. He checked my engine and determined that the starter was not the problem, it was the battery. He took the time to check out the rest of my vehicle and offered some suggestions on what I could do to improve performance with my engine as well as give me a quote on my other issues. I will definitely book Joel again. Thank you very much for a pleasant and hassle free experience.
