What is the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable all about?

The parking brake cable is a thin, steel cable that connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. It is located underneath the car. When you pull the lever, this cable enables the parking brake shoes to press against the rotor or the drum, creating the friction that keeps the car from rolling. It is just like using the brake pedal, but in this case, you are using the parking brake cable instead of brake fluids to apply the pressure. Over time the cable can rust and break. If the parking brake cable is broken, the car will roll even when the parking brake has been engaged.

Keep in mind:

The brake drums or pads often need to be removed to access the emergency brake cable. During this time, the drums and pads should be inspected to see if they also need to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace parking brake cable.
  • Adjust parking brake.
  • Test parking brake.

Our recommendation:

Always apply the parking brake when the car is parked. This will keep the parking brake adjusted properly. Your mechanic should inspect the parking brake cable during every brake service. They should also periodically spray rust penetrant chemical on the cable to prevent rust from building up.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable?

  • Parking brake does not hold car.
  • Parking brake does not release.
  • Parking brake warning light is on.

How important is this service?

All services associated with proper function of your brakes are important. In addition to safety issues, ignoring small repairs can quickly lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems.

Mercedes-Benz C300 V6-3.0L - Spark Plugs - Matthews, North Carolina
There is nothing a person with car issues love more than an HONEST MECHANIC. Travis serviced my C300 Mercedes by replacing my sparks plugs. Initially the service was suggested to be roughly $400. Well, Travis was not only on time and ready to get the job done, but he notified me that additional parts and labor wasn’t needed as part of the service which reduced the bill by $100. I understand that driving foreign can get quite expensive. However we all know, in many cases mechanics will not inform you of this and will still charge you, if not more. I appreciate his time, attentiveness, and honest service. He completed the job very quickly as well. I can already tell the difference in the performance of the vehicle. Thanks Travis, you have my stamp of approval and Im looking forward to having you service my car again in the future.
