What is the Windshield Wiper Linkage all about?

Windshield wipers give the driver a clear view of the road ahead. In order to clear rain from the windshield effectively, the wipers are synced up to move water off to the sides. In order to get power to the wiper arms and to keep the wipers synchronized, the windshield wiper linkage is needed. The linkage allows power from the wiper motors to get the wiper arms.

Keep in mind:

  • Some windshield wiper linkages use many components, while others use as little as one bracket.
  • Having more pieces may or may not make the wiper assembly more prone to breaking.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle hood is raised and secured in the open position
  • The wiper linkage bolts are loosened and removed.
  • The wiper linkage is removed
  • The new wiper linkage is installed and properly lubricated
  • The wipers are tested for proper operation

When issues come up with your windshield wipers, it's commonly an indication that the windshield wiper linkage is broken or otherwise in poor operating condition. This should be addressed right away. When the mechanic is diagnosing the issue, he/she can inspect the wiper motor and the points at which the linkage attaches to the motor and wiper arms. I am not one to make comments on my experiences with an individual or a company. I am today because I feel it is worth 5 minutes to do so. I had another mechanic from "your mechanic" come prior to this visit and fixed a few ancillary things on my Mercedes. However, there were unique issues with my electrical that had me spinning. I called the company and explained the prior situation and was at the point where if they did not fix my issues I had already decided I would never use them again. That did not happen! They called and after my lengthy explanation, not only did they come back out, but send the guy that knew Mercedes electrical better than any other. This group is stellar and if they continue to take care of people the way they did me "your Mechanic" will be a household name.
