What is the Door Lock Actuator all about?

A door lock actuator is the component in electronic door locks that is responsible for locking and unlocking the vehicle’s doors. When a button is pressed to lock or unlock a door, the door lock switch triggers the actuator. A small motor in the actuator then triggers a series of gears. The final gear is connected to a rack and pinion set of gears, which converts the rotational motion of the motor into the vertical motion necessary to lock or unlock the door.

Keep in mind:

Some modern vehicles have a complete door lock assembly which can’t be separated into individual components. These vehicles will need the entire assembly replaced, rather than just the actuator.

Our recommendation:

The door lock system shouldn’t be checked unless you notice that something is wrong. As soon as you notice your vehicle behave oddly when you lock or unlock the doors, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Door Lock Actuator?

  • Doors won’t lock.
  • Doors won’t unlock.
  • Doors will only lock or unlock sporadically.
  • Doors make an unusual noise while locking or unlocking.
  • Car alarm goes off randomly.

How important is this service?

A door lock actuator is responsible for locking and unlocking your doors. When the door lock switch is triggered, the actuator’s motor powers a set of gears that lock or unlock your door. When the actuator stops working, there is no communication between the door lock switch and the door locks, and you’ll be unable to lock or unlock the door.

My car overheated and then eventually died. Now it wont crank and I have coolant all over my engine

Based on your description the engine was overheating and the overheating was accompanied by a large coolant leak (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/coolant-is-leaking-inspection). Hi! 2017 [Corolla](/topics-corolla/) SE, car will crank longer than usual after being driven and parked for a few hours. However it will start immediately on the mornings, when it’s cold or when it has just been turned off a couple minutes before hand. I’ve realized it takes a bit longer to start when the car has been sitting for a longer period but nothing past about 3-4 hours. They ran full diagnostics and checked the battery [starter](/topics-starter-toyota/) and [alternators](/topics-alternator-toyota/) and they couldn’t find replicate nor find the problem
