What is the Window Motor all about?

The window motor is located inside the door panel behind the trim, and is responsible for raising and lowering the window when the switch is pressed. It is a reversible electric motor, powered up by an electric switch on the inside of the door. When the button to open or close the window is pressed, a circuit completes and the electric window motor cycles. The window glass is attached to a track and is on a window regulator that allow it to move squarely and smoothly up and down. If the window motor is faulty, you may experience a slow-moving window especially upward, the window may not move at all when the button is pressed, or the window may begin to sink back into the door after the power window switch is released.

Keep in mind:

  • The window motor is a sealed unit, and is not designed to need maintenance or service.
  • A window motor is located inside each door equipped with a power window. Accessing and repairing a power window motor is best left to one of our expert technicians.

How it's done:

  • Identify which window motor has failed.
  • Remove door panel to gain access.
  • Remove and replace faulty window motor and regulator.
  • Check operation of the window regulator and motor.
  • Reinstall door panel.

Our recommendation:

Because the window motor is a sealed system, it does not receive any scheduled maintenance. When it fails, replacement is the only option. However, there are other potential causes of malfunctions, including the window switch and wiring problems. If you’ve noticed that your window motor is not working properly, or it is working inconsistently, have the problem diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Window Motor?

  • Window does not roll up or down
  • Window rolls down but not up
  • Window does not hold its position
  • Window slows or stalls out when rolling up the window

How important is this service?

The power window motor closes your door windows to provide security for belongings inside, and provides protection from environmental elements. A window must be able to open in the event of an emergency, so have a faulty window motor replaced immediately.

Mercedes-Benz 300SD L5-3.0L Turbo Diesel - Noise from engine or exhaust - Mountain View, California
Robert is good or even better than the other reviews. He does not only solve your problem but he ensures that your car is at its best before he leaves. He tries very hard to make your car perfect. When parts are not available he will try to make it. I regret very much not to hive him a tip when he left. It seems that Robert has a very busy schedule. Perhaps, his devotion to perfection takes extra time and make him a little bit late on schedule.
