What is the Headlight Switch all about?

The headlamp switch allows you to turn on the lights. If the switch does not work, you will not be able to turn on the lights. Not only is it unsafe to drive the car without proper lights, but it is also illegal.

Keep in mind:

  • The switch may only be available at the dealer. YourMechanic will find the cost and availability from a local dealer.
  • Your vehicle may have a combination switch, which combines the headlight switch and turn signal switch in one assembly.

How it's done:

  • Inspect the switch.
  • Test the fuses.
  • Remove and replace the switch if found faulty.
  • Check operation of all vehicle lighting.

Our recommendation:

A mechanic should inspect all the lights in the car during every major service event. If the lights do not come on, the mechanic should inspect the fuse, wiring, and connectors. It is common for the lens to get dirty and not allow enough light to shine through. You should keep the headlamp lens clean and free of oxidation. Mechanics can use a special lens oxidation restorer kit to clean the headlights.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Headlight Switch?

  • Headlamps do not turn on.
  • Running lights do not turn on.
  • Not able to select or deselect high beam operation.

How important is this service?

The headlight switch allows you to turn on and off your headlights. When you press the button or pull the lever (depending on your vehicle) to turn on your headlights, the headlight switch is responsible for triggering the lights. A broken headlight switch means that you won’t be able to turn on your headlights. Driving without headlights is a hazard to you, your passengers, and your surroundings, and it can also result in an expensive ticket.

Mazda 6 L4-2.3L - Car is not starting - San Jose, California
Mark would be the fourth mechanic I've had to work with from YM in the past few months. He was sent in to diagnose a rather deep issue with starting of the car that eluded two other YM mechanics before him and caused some obvious delays/back-forth and ultimately frustration for me. But working with him restored my faith in YM as being my first choice for car trouble. He was very thorough in his diagnosis, spent a lot of time checking various systems, followed up persistently as I had to take it to the dealer, and came back a second time after the car was back from the dealer for post-inspection recommendations. His reports helped me with YM corporate office as well in getting refunds for prior misdiagnosis as well. Without saying much else, I'd put him as an all-rounder - perfect overall experience for me. YM corporate, thanks a bunch to you as well. Your policies on refunds in such rare cases of misdiagnosis are very customer friendly and while I was concerned at one time that I am stuck with a needless bill, you made it just right for me. I am all the more advocate for YM now because of that policy and keeping crew like Mark.

Mazda 6 V6-3.0L - Engine or Transmission Mount Replacement - Las Vegas, Nevada
Patrick was both professional and friendly, willingly chatting it up with me about my car. He lowered my estimate because the job was slightly less than what the website quoted, which was nice. While my mount was described as "broken" by another mechanic, he mentioned it was merely cracked and it was up to me if I wanted to get it replaced, which I did anyway because eventually the cracking would lead to a breakage. It was definitely a pleasure to be able to see and talk to the mechanic who was working on my car vs oftentimes where you just talk to the front man of the shop. I would fully recommend Patrick to anyone who needs work on their car and I will go back to him for any work more than an oil change.

Vw passat 1999 1.8 t has loss of power. Won't go over 40 mpg. Or over 3000 rpm unless first started. I have replaced mass air flow sensor, the turbo, exhaust and intake manifold gaskets, the fuel filter, replaced crankshaft breather assembly, changed spark plugs, ran lucas fuel cleaner through it, cleaned top end of motor, tested fuel pressure--55 psi at idle, 60 psi at acceleration, only ran 91 octane fuel and octane boost helps but doesn't eliminate problem. Slow to accelerate, no power for even slightly steep climbs. Was misfiring cylinder 1 but after spark plugs replacement no longer misfiring. Have not replaced air/fuel regulator sensor or fuel sock in tank.

The abs the handbrake and the traction lights all came.on together. I think I forgot to take the handbrake off and tried to drive then realised and pulled over and took it off and the 3 lights have been on since
