What is the Windshield Washer Pump all about?

The windshield washer pump is a small electric water pump. When the washer pump is activated, it takes the washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir and directs it to be sprayed through the washer jets onto the windshield. It is an electrical component that can fail over time. If you don't see any fluid coming out of the washer jets when you activate the windshield wiper switch, ask the mechanic to check the tubes for cracks and the nozzles for clogging.

Keep in mind:

Whenever the windshield washer pump is repaired or replaced, the entire windshield washing system should be inspected. It’s possible that the nozzles or the wiper switch are actually the cause of the problem.

How it's done:

  • Test operation of the wiper switch.
  • Make sure the nozzles are not clogged.
  • Test for power and ground at the washer pump.
  • Remove and replace the washer pump.
  • Test for proper operation of the washer system.

Our recommendation:

The windshield washing and wiping system is usually not inspected during routine maintenance. However, anytime a part of the windshield washing and wiping system is replaced or repaired, the windshield washer pump should be checked. If you notice that your vehicle is having a hard time spraying wiper fluid onto your windshield, you should schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Windshield Washer Pump?

When the washer pump is activated, washer fluid doesn't spray on windshield.

How important is this service?

Your windshield washing system is designed to keep your windshield clean and your visibility high. When you pull the windshield washer switch on the steering column, the windshield washer pump is activated. The windshield washer pump is an electric water pump that pulls washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir, and sends it to the washer jets, where it is sprayed onto the windshield through nozzles. This washer fluid acts as soap, and the windshield wiper blades then wipe it off. This process cleans your windshield of any dirt and debris that has accumulated on it.

When the windshield washer pump malfunctions, washer fluid will not be sent to the washer jets, and your vehicle will not be able to spray washer fluid onto the windshield. As a result, your visibility will decrease.

Lexus IS300 V6-3.5L - Car is not starting - Mount Vernon, New York
Luis is very pleasant, polite and knowledgeable. He pinpointed the reason for my car not starting in less than a minute (dead battery) and got to resolving the matter promptly. He further diagnosed my car to make sure that all potential reasons for it not starting was reviewed. He made sure that the battery had sufficent time to charge, suggested that we go to and auto parts store near my house to ensure that the battery is not past it prime. He communicated with the store associate to get my battery tested, made sure everything was ship shape before he ended the appointment. He did not rush through the appointment, but actually to his time to thoroughly check things out. I'll definitely be request him again in the future if if have an issue with my car and need a mechanic.

Lexus IS300 L6-3.0L - Oxygen Sensor Replacement (Front/Upper/Upstream) - Jonesboro, Georgia
Mr. Elphic was very professional. He called and asked if he could arrive sooner than expected, which was definitely a plus. Upon arrival, he confirmed the services he would be performing and I supplied the parts. He finished in a very timely manner and communicated other repairs needed in the near future. All old parts were given back to me boxed up and the area was clean as if he never performed any work. I was skeptical of using this online service but I wish i had known about it sooner. The price was outstanding and the work is excellent. There's no hassle and no up-selling. Mr. Elphic was very friendly and professional and I'm definitely going to use this service from now on. I can't imagine ever going to a garage/shop again, unless it's something major.
