It’s never a good sign when you notice abnormal wear and tear on your tire treads. Abnormal wear suggests that your tire has a shortened lifespan, and it can also mean that there’s a larger issue at stake with your vehicle. You should never ignore abnormal wear, such as one tire wearing faster than the other three.

How this system works:

Your four tires are the only things that come into contact with the road. As a result, they are susceptible to wearing and tearing due to the constant contact with the road when you drive. Your four wheels are designed – through alignments, tire specifications, and proper air pressure – to share the contact with the road, and to wear in an even manner. When something sets one wheel out of balance, the tire on that wheel is susceptible to abnormal wear and tear.

Common reasons for this to happen:

There are a number of different issues that can result in one tire wearing faster than the other three:

  • Improper air pressure in one tire: Tires are designed to have a specific level of air pressure in them. If they are under-inflated, the outside of the wheels can wear too much, and the tire is susceptible to cupping. If they are over-inflated, the middle of the tire is the only part in contact with the road, and the pressure of the tire can cause the vehicle to bounce slightly, causing further damage to the tire.

  • Wheel misalignment: An alignment sets your wheels at the ideal angles, so that each wheel is lined up with the others. This allows the car to be able to drive in a straight line, corner effectively and predictably, and it helps the tires wear slowly and evenly. If the wheels are not properly aligned, one tire may be subject to more wear and tear than the other three.

  • Tires have not been rotated: It’s important to have your tires rotated on a regular basis, because different corners of your vehicle may experience different wear and tear than others. For instance, one of your right tires (front for a front-wheel drive car, rear for a rear-wheel drive car) will be subject to the most wear and tear, especially in a powerful vehicle. This is because slightly more power goes to the right side of the vehicle, because that is the side that hosts the drive wheel. This wear and tear is minimal enough that it will be negated by proper tire rotation, but if the tires are not rotated regularly, this may result in noticeable wear in one of the tires.

  • Damaged suspension: Many of the components in the suspension system – such as the shock absorbers, struts, control arms, and ball joints – can have an impact on tire tread wear. The suspension connects your wheels to the frame of your car, and helps evenly distribute the weight of the vehicle and the impact of the road. If a shock absorber, strut, control arm, or ball joint becomes damaged, it can put large amounts of pressure on one wheel. This can cause abnormal wear, or simply throw off the alignment, which will eventually result in uneven wear and tear.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the cause of one wheel wearing faster than the others, and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs.

How it's done:

Before replacing your tire, a mechanic will thoroughly inspect your suspension system to make sure that a larger issue is not in effect. If there is something wrong with the struts, shock absorbers, ball joints, or control arms, the mechanic will replace them, and then replace the tire. All four tires will be checked to make sure that they’re in similar condition, and filled with the correct amount of air pressure.

How important is this service?

Services that feature tires are always important. A tire that is very worn will have a shorter lifespan and is susceptible to blowing out. One tire that is wearing faster than the others can be a sign of a larger issue with the suspension system, which will only become further damaged if it is ignored. You should always schedule an inspection as soon as you notice that one tire is wearing faster than the others.

Kia Sedona V6-3.8L - Axle / CV Shaft Assembly Replacement (Driver Side Front) - Saint Louis, Missouri
As always Luke went above and beyond. The service I requested was replacing CV shafts of both front sides, but that of passenger side didn't come off. He used many tools to remove that from the hub, but it didn't work. He tried that with extended hours, but he didn't charge me for that side even though he spent more time than expected. Finally I noticed that I need more stuff (knuckle and hub) to install CV shaft after he explained what was going on to my car. He is really honest, sincere and knowledgeable. I always trust him.

Kia Rio L4-1.6L - Battery - Millington, Tennessee
He texted when he was on his way. Mohammod was very nice & polite. He knew what the order contained, (battery & window wipers) and got right to work. A 15 point inspection was included with the price, and he alerted me to other issues. I was charged exactly what was quoted. Also, I live in a small town in Tenn. and there wasn't a mechanic nearby. But Your Mechanic searched until they found one who would work on Sunday. I would call Your Mechanic again if ever I needed work down at my home.
