What is the parking brake cable all about?

The parking brake (also known as emergency brake) cable is a steel cable that is very thin. It connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. When you activate the parking brake, the cable pulls on the parking brake shoes, which causes them to clamp onto the brake drum or rotor. If the parking brake cable gets too much slack, the parking brake won’t work, and the cable will need to be adjusted.

Keep in mind:

  • When the parking cable is adjusted it should be inspected to see if it needs to be replaced.

Your parking brake shoes are connected to the parking brake lever by the parking brake cable. When you deploy the parking brake lever, the parking brake cable is pulled taut. This pulls on the parking brake shoes, and causes them to clamp on the rear brake drums or rotors. This clamping causing keeps your wheels from being able to move, and secures your car when it is parked. If the parking brake cable becomes too loose, then the tension created by pulling the parking brake lever isn’t enough to move the parking brake shoes. As a result, when you pull the parking brake lever, the parking brake will not work effectively.

I have a 2006 Jetta 2.5 auto drives fine for about 20 mins or so then at every stop I have to pop it into Neural or it will stall on me. Then have to drive it as if it was a stick shift or the engine will cut off on me. Only happens after driving it for about 20 mins, before that I can stop at a light and have no issues. If I turn off the car and let it rest I can start the whole cycle again.
