What is the Windshield Washer Pump all about?

The windshield washer pump is a small electric water pump. When the washer pump is activated, it takes the washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir and directs it to be sprayed through the washer jets onto the windshield. It is an electrical component that can fail over time. If you don't see any fluid coming out of the washer jets when you activate the windshield wiper switch, ask the mechanic to check the tubes for cracks and the nozzles for clogging.

Keep in mind:

Whenever the windshield washer pump is repaired or replaced, the entire windshield washing system should be inspected. It’s possible that the nozzles or the wiper switch are actually the cause of the problem.

How it's done:

  • Test operation of the wiper switch.
  • Make sure the nozzles are not clogged.
  • Test for power and ground at the washer pump.
  • Remove and replace the washer pump.
  • Test for proper operation of the washer system.

Our recommendation:

The windshield washing and wiping system is usually not inspected during routine maintenance. However, anytime a part of the windshield washing and wiping system is replaced or repaired, the windshield washer pump should be checked. If you notice that your vehicle is having a hard time spraying wiper fluid onto your windshield, you should schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Windshield Washer Pump?

When the washer pump is activated, washer fluid doesn't spray on windshield.

How important is this service?

Your windshield washing system is designed to keep your windshield clean and your visibility high. When you pull the windshield washer switch on the steering column, the windshield washer pump is activated. The windshield washer pump is an electric water pump that pulls washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir, and sends it to the washer jets, where it is sprayed onto the windshield through nozzles. This washer fluid acts as soap, and the windshield wiper blades then wipe it off. This process cleans your windshield of any dirt and debris that has accumulated on it.

When the windshield washer pump malfunctions, washer fluid will not be sent to the washer jets, and your vehicle will not be able to spray washer fluid onto the windshield. As a result, your visibility will decrease.

Buick Park Avenue V6-3.8L - Car is not starting - Severna Park, Maryland
I really liked how he explained everything that he was doing, he made my day by doing that. I had taken my car to a shop once before and I feel like I got ripped off. Nothing was explained to me and they treated me like a typical girl. I know basic mechanics but don't always have the time to work on my car being as I only have the one; and have to work so many hours. This is why I love the services you provide. Thank you.

Buick Park Avenue V6-3.8L - Car is not starting - Tucson, Arizona
Jose was a very good choice of mechanic to help me with my car. Although the electrical problem I had with my car was too big to solve right on site at my residence, I thank him for his attempt to locate the problem and repair it. He gave me a good recommendation and advice as to what to tell my regular mechanic. He was also very good at what he did and showed real knowledge of the job. Thank you, Jose, for trying the best you could and for your recommended steps to take. I'll be using the service again..!! Best regards, Ron Dilks
