What is lubricating the ball joints all about?

Good suspension allows the wheels to move over bumps and potholes smoothly while making the car experience a very small amount of the jolt. In order for the wheels to move freely of the vehicle’s body, joints connect parts together while allowing them to move around. On parts that need to move in multiple directions at the same time, ball joints are the only solution.

Keep in mind:

  • To access the ball joint, wheels and brake components will usually have to be removed.
  • When lubricating the ball joint, the steering knuckle and other suspension components can be inspected for excess wear.
  • If a ball joint is covered in a rubber boot, the mechanic will make sure that the boot is still protecting the joint from dirt and debris.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle is raised and supported on jack stands
  • The ball joints on the suspension system is located
  • The Zerk grease fittings on the ball joints are located
  • New grease is pumped into the grease fittings with a grease gun
  • The vehicle is lowered off of the jack stands

Our recommendation:

The ball joints should be lubricated when the manufacturer suggests. This information can usually be found in a vehicle’s manual. The lubricant may wear away prematurely if the joint is not properly protected. Servicing the ball joints usually requires the removal of the wheels and brakes. This allows access to other components that usually aren’t as easily serviceable. Other joints aside from the ball joint may need lubrication. Parts may be showing excess wear. The steering knuckle and control arm should be inspected as well. There are many kinds of suspension and steering components that a vehicle could have, so consult the vehicle’s manual for any model-specific repairs or services that may need to be done.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to lubricate the ball joints?

  • Loud squeaking or groaning when the suspension moves or when steering
  • Steering or suspension seems to operate less smoothly

How important is this service?

This service is fairly important and affects crucial components in the vehicle. Proper lubrication of components is a staple of preventative maintenance. Ball joints have to be completely replaced when they become too worn, and wear happens much faster without proper lubrication.

BMW X5 L6-3.0L Turbo Diesel - Brake Pads Replacement (Rear) - Bothell, Washington
This is my first time using YourMechanic and I've seen mixed reviews about such a service, so I was hesitant at first. However, I researched around and it felt like going with someone like Theodore will help improve my experience. I booked the appointment and crossed my fingers that things will go well. Theodore was spot on. He arrive exactly at 10am in my front door. Had a quick chat about any of my concerns and on he went to do his job. He finished the task expediently. I did a test drive, signed the invoice and off he went. Yes, it was that quick and easy. I had a similar job performed at my usual autoshop about a year ago for the front brakes and it costed me over $600. I managed to get this similar job done for less than $350 total. Saved over $250. And I didn't see any additional advantage of doing this at some shop. In fact, it was much more convenient to do this at my home, where I didn't sit around and wasted my valuable time. Overall, this was a great experience and I wouldn't hesitate to use Theodore again for all my future auto needs.

BMW 530i L6-3.0L - Ignition Coil - Dublin, California
Mechanic did the job that was request. The problem has to do with the final price. I originally got a quote on the web for $199.67 and since this is my first time I wasn't sure if I wanted to go through with this so I called the 800# to get additional information and they said I will get 10% off if I book with them while on the phone with the same quote I got the web so it would be 180.67 to replace ignition engine coil. But once the job was done, I got a final bill for $215.25 When I called the 800# to get an explanation of the bill, they said the quote on the job was $235 and with the 10% discount came to $215.25 It's odd that the quote became $235 when it was $180.67. Clearly this is bait and switch to increase the final quote so with the so called 10% discount came to the same amount as the quote I got on the internet. The 800 # representative tried to explain that their was check engine light check that was done which was $99. If that was the case the bill should have been $324 so that explanation made so sense. Furthermore, if that was the case, they needed to give me a new pricing quote and let me know the new price for me to authorize and agree on the price. That never happened so I know the phone reps explanation was totally made up. The mechanic was knowledgeable and did the job well. The company tactics are questionable and I would never use this company as this was clear marketing and bait and switch approach. Make sure you get the final quote before any service is performed so you don't get nay surprise with the final bill that is different than what was promised.
