What is the parking brake cable all about?

The parking brake (also known as emergency brake) cable is a steel cable that is very thin. It connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. When you activate the parking brake, the cable pulls on the parking brake shoes, which causes them to clamp onto the brake drum or rotor. If the parking brake cable gets too much slack, the parking brake won’t work, and the cable will need to be adjusted.

Keep in mind:

When the parking cable is adjusted it should be inspected to see if it needs to be replaced.

Your parking brake shoes are connected to the parking brake lever by the parking brake cable. When you deploy the parking brake lever, the parking brake cable is pulled taut. This pulls on the parking brake shoes, and causes them to clamp on the rear brake drums or rotors. This clamping causing keeps your wheels from being able to move, and secures your car when it is parked. If the parking brake cable becomes too loose, then the tension created by pulling the parking brake lever isn’t enough to move the parking brake shoes. As a result, when you pull the parking brake lever, the parking brake will not work effectively.

First time using YourMechanic. Great experience!! Our car wouldn't run because the clutch had failed. We didn't want to pay to have it towed to a service station that could easily overestimate the amount of work that would "need" to be done to get the clutch working again. We researched the problem ourselves, bought the parts and were ready to spend half a day doing the repairs alongside YouTube video instruction when an internet ad for the YourMechanic website caught my attention. So glad we discovered this option!! Very reasonable labor rate and full disclosure of fees. Didn't even have to return the parts we had already purchased.
